The Vodka Thread

You gonna let alcohol beat you like that? Those beers are laughing at you. Show 'em who’s boss!

NO NO NO NO.

This is how to get drunk properly, and I had perfected this after 5 years at uni, and 5 years of every night after work. (I’ve now stopped because I actually decided I like my kidneys)

  1. Drink 3 pints of beer, my preference was Guiness.
  2. Eat a pub dinner, burger and chips is good.
  3. Play pool badly whilst drinking further 2 - 3 pints of Guiness.
  4. Decide your full, and couldn’t fit in another pint, so switch to Smirnoff Ice. have 4 or 5 because they go down so quickly.
  5. leave pub and if hungry/got the muchies get kebab on the way home.

Get up at 7am the next morning for work, rince and repeat.

This did lead to us finding out the best way to make shandies ever though. Usual shady is ahlf a pint of beer to half a pint of lemonade. Replace the lemonade with Smirnoff Ice. Tastes fantastic, knocks you flat after 4.

Getting drunk properly and Smirnoff Ice, never the twain shall meet.

For the cheap seats, no conversation about serious drinking should involve that easy drinking, malt liquor bullshit. That stuff’s a crime and if you’re going to rape your liver in every orifice at least do it with some semblance of class and style.

In fact I’m having a fuck of a time picturing somebody who enjoy’s Guinness (mother’s milk) as much as you seem to who also drinks Smirnoff fucking Ice.

Now, as for vodka:

Ketel One is tops for a vodka that almost any bar will have. Its got a clean taste, a smooth drink and mixes well for those who absolutely have to put something else in there.

But its ideal with rocks and a couple of olives or out of a shot-glass.

Luksosowa is a polish potato vodka that’s a has a bit of a harsher burn than other vodkas but is still the shit.

Smirnoff and absolut suck. Sorry, but Absolut has this oily quality to it that I just don’t enjoy drinking. Finlandia I group with these too along with flavored vodka.

Flavored vodka is bullshit.

Skyy is alright, kinda dull with no real flavor of its own. Now for those of you who are going to start crying that vodka has no taste, you clearly don’t drink it straight up very often.

For those of you who like sources, here is a decent one I just found: http://www.slate.com/id/2106004

I haven’t tried the higher end vodkas on this list, but they held up my opinion of Ketel 1, and made me want to try some of the higher end stuff.

Ketel one also makes an excellent Bloody Mary for those mornings after where you can barely see straight, you’re stomach’s wrung out like a sweat towel you don’t know whether to shit, go blind or throw up.

You know those mornings. Where you damn near put your eye out trying to get your sunglasses on in time to venture out.

well i didn’t end up drinking very much of the bottle and got uncomfortably wasted. i think i only passed out playing gta4 because i had smoked a few too many bong hits at some point. i recall waking up at about 0730 considering going to vomit, but just fell back asleep until about 1045 and just waking up really hungry.

i don’t think i’ll be doing that again for a couple of days. and i only drank maybe 6 oz total.

pffft What a light weight.

I’d like for one of you vodka afficianados to explain to me what makes for a great vodka. I’ve had what I’ve been told was great vodka and it didn’t taste much different than mediocre vodka.

It seems to me that the best vodka is the one with the least flavor. I just don’t get it.

I’ll take something with some flavor: scotch, tequilla, calvados, cognac, etc.

Actually, I did have a nice pepper vodka once. My Russian friend in college made it himself by steeping dried peppers in vodka for several months. That was nice stuff, with pickles and pelmienis (spelling?).

Vodka should be like water: tasteless and odorless with no bite. Belvedere and Grey Goose are the closest I’ve had to this “ideal.”

The harsher the bite, the worse the vodka.

Like Steve said, Monopolowa is the best inexpensive vodka out there.

These days I drink Tito’s, distilled right here in Austin. I looked down my nose at it for two years until I read something similar to this in the local newspaper:

This was at the World Spirits Competition (2004 I think) by the way, not some local tasting.

My stepmother brought some vodka back from Russia that was better though, but I can’t get my hands on it regularly.

Wow, that sounds pretty good. I’m guessing it’s wheat based? I’ll always be a potato snob when it comes to vodka but I would def try that stuff.

No, he makes it from corn.

His distillery is right by a millworks shop where I used to work in an area filled with industrial warehouses. You can go down there and hang out with him. My buddy went and when Tito offered him a drink my friend asked, " What do you have to mix it with?"

“I have ice.” Tito replied.

Forgot Neildo asked how we drink our vodka. I drink Tito’s in VERY dry martini’s (just wave the upright vermouth bottle over the glass a la W.C. Fields style, thank you), with tonic and on the rocks.

Chinggis Khan… Mongolian vodka is the best I have ever had. I bring some back everytime I go, or when friends come over to visit. Also milk vodka, not sure how they do it, nor if it is technically vodka, but it too is fantastic.

Not a fan of the goose myself, I prefer my vodka with Cyrllic writing on the label. In the United States sometimes I will go with one of the many fruit juices and vodka. But, most of the time, room temp straight is how I like to drink it. Of course, I love vodka.

Aaron Fields

OH SNAP

ITS SCREWDRIVER TIEM

Marketed as Vodka in the UK but actually made by a slightly different method. Slightly warmer but smooth mouth feel. Stonger in the UK than in it’s native Netherlands for some reason.

The classic Polish vodka, plain or bison grass.

And a good vodka from Ireland. I like this one for it’s smoothness.

Grey Goose Vanilla with a splash of Coke

Effin Vodka is good also.

One of my favorite mixed drinks of all time is:

Vodka
Club Soda
Ice
Lime/Lemon/Both

I generally either drink Rain or Tito’s (thanks jnp) if I am drinking vodka. I almost always drink it in the aforementioned combination due to many bad incidents in college that can be traced to shots of vodka. Vodka and cranberry or pomegranate is an acceptable drink, as is the infamous energy drink/vodka mix that generally leads to no good. Unless my roommate is retarded enough to purchase Smirnoff Watermelon Vodka. Which means he is going to get drunk enough to throw a tantrum if I don’t partake of shots of that crap.

Wow a whole vodka thread and not one mention of Russian Standard. I am going to disagree with JNP and say RUSSIAN STANDARD is the best AND cheapest vodka out there. Imperial is the top shelf version, but I stick with the standard…soooooo good!

I like to drink vodka “the russian way”. which involves eating alot between the drinks and not mixing the vodka with anything.

I put water outside of the vodka bottle and put it in the refrigerator and let it be there for a couple of days. make sure that there is some drops of water left outside of the bottle(yes the vodka is in the bottle) glass bottle is prefeared because of the taste.
Alcohol don’t freeze as easily as water do but keep the temperatur at abou +4 degress celsius anyway to avoid broken bottles;)

I make alot of food for the big night. Some of the food should be greasy. I make a russian salat which I don’t remember the name of. Maybe it was plow or prow don’t remember that well. It is basically potato salad with chopped up vegetables pees and some ham. this salad should also have some time in the refrigiator i usually make it one day before the big day. remember to wrap it in with plastic so it don’t go rancid.

when the big night arrives -> I will have cooled down vodka alot of food and a big table where everybody can sit. I place out 2 glasses at every sitting place. 1 small shot glass and 1 big glass for water. the vodka will served in the small shot glass and it will not be mixed with any other fluids. you can drink some water after each shot if you it get’s to strong for you. Vodka will taste almost like water if it is cooled down enough.
I swear! just wash the outside of the vodka bottle in cold water make sure there are some drops on it when you put it in the refrigator. let it be there for 1-2 days at +4 celcius and it should taste differnet and alot better than warm vodka. You will feel a warm sensation when you drink vodka like this. you won’t feel cold as easy. Remember to eat as you go or you will probably vomit.

Food will be served and It is recommend to eat alot because the food will keep you from vomiting. Greasy food is good because it stops alcohol from being absorbed into your system so fast. Just remember to eat alittle now and then.

My favourites are Stolichnaya and Grasovska Vodkas with Grey Goose as a distant third due to its price.
Absolut, Finlandia, Vikingfjord, Smirnoff etc are rubbish vodkas only suitable for mixed drinks to hide the taste IMO.

I drink it room temperature and straight. Usually I sip it to fully appreciate the taste but when the time for hitting the bars comes up I shot like there’s no tomorrow. And I always try to get some grub inside me first due to earlier mishaps in my youth when I went drinking on an empty stomach.

Stolichnaya or Ketal One, I keep mine in the freezer. I drink it like Rick in Casablanca…

4 oz at a time… repeat until you can’t feel your face.

When it comes to tipping em back I learned a long time ago that it is in your best interests to invest in your pleasure, money can be no object. I am a big supporter of Grey Goose, it is smooth with a nice warming quality and is very clean leading you to the highest rungs on the drunken euphoria ladder. It’s all about the high quality, you are getting what you pay for! Tastes good going down, feels amazing that night, and the next day you wake up like a fresh pressed pair of socks. Crisp, clean and ready for the road.

I don’t go in for that flavored stuff. Too tacky, I think Ketel one is a little beneath the goose and while I had to turn in my drinking license to the ball and chain, I am always open to the knowledge of vodkas that live above grey goose. To explain how well this beverage treats me (either straight warm, chilled straight, or chilled over ice with lime and club soda) let me reiterate the night of my sometimes bedbuddy, all the time dancing partner, zoe’s birthday party.

I show up and shit is crazy, it’s in some rundown old mill building with art studios in it, and the whole bottom floor is themed as an “office sex party” the place has got desks and computers and all that, everbody is wearing mock buisness-casual with lingerie underneath, and there are DJ’s blowing it up. I stroll in wearing a suit and a speedo with my warm bottle of Goose and get to work, I talk to my friend Mike who is Djing and tell him to put on some dirty southern hip hop and I take a few big gulps off the bottle. Two songs later my track comes up and I take the dance floor and start stripping my clothes off. It’s only about midnight so people are on the cusp of defining the evening, some are backing down and some are stepping up. After another hour and about half the thin bottle, the crowd has been pared down to the people who came to get crazy. Everyone is in underpants and lingerie and it is getting dirty, I’m in one of the office chairs with zoe on one knee and this girl Ashley on the other and they are taking turns making out with each other, then me, then all of us together, then ashley basically kicks zoe out and we pretty much have sex right there in the fake office. I go back out on the dance floor start making out with some other girl who’s name i never learned but who apparently had just moved to town, and I finished the rest of the bottle with the help of the crowd.

That stuff is my great grey rocket fuel, it gets me pumped up but not out of control. Well okay, out of control but still coherent enough to get sexy with the ladies. That’s a true story, and I’m pretty sure without the inhibition smashing, little demon feeding, bad desicion loving power of high grade alcohol such an amazing night would not have been possible. I sure as fuck havent had that much fun since I STOPPED drinking. Or maybe it’s because I got a girlfriend. or Both.
