Hey guys
I live in Buffalo, NY. And a couple years back after a little hiatus from martial arts. I was ready again to get back into it, so I started to look around for schools and I found a school called The Training Edge, they taught Karate, kickboxing and Krav Maga.
So their song and dance impress me,so I signed up. For the first couple of months it was great!. But then I started to notice something was wrong. My Mcdojo sense was tingling. So I told myself its time to go, then they tell me that I signed up for a 2 year contact. So eventually I had to take them to small claims court for them taking more money then that was owned, at the end of month rate. I won my freedom and money back so I was able to leave.
While I was there, there were some Mcdojo traits that happen that I want to share. First they only held tournaments in their school and didn’t like students going to other ones. Kids were getting bump up belts, like every 3 months, when they totally sucked. They also had stars and tape strips that they awarded to the good students to put on they uniforms. But the worst thing that happen there, even in my entire 9+year martial art history. There was this family that used to be my neighbors, and their daughter went there. At first I thought it was cool cause they were nice people. But then I come to find out that her dad, that had no martial art background was awarded a gray belt by the teachers. Then by the time I left the place which was only a time period of less than a year, he went from a gray to a black belt.
You guys have to check out their website The Training Edge.com and tell me what you think and if you have been or seen the place before. And if you have any questions about the place or what happen just ask away.:uhaul:
Thanks:englishmo:sniperdan
Which classes did you take?
I took “advanced karate” classes
Run back to Noobville have you charlie? Maybe you should have started in here before you proceeded to YMAS and dribbled shit…
Talking of dribbling shit, why have you stopped posting in your other training edge mcdojo thread?
So did you see any of the other adult classes? If you don’t mind me asking, how old are you?
Well SaintI’m an ass. I’m good thanks for asking, well I don’t mind taking shitty comebacks and replies on YMAS or any other forum. But this topic I’m seriously trying to talk about this school, their frauds and a disgrace. And because my thread has been bounce around on site. So now I’m try anything to get people to listen.:XXphyhsas
I can’t not tell you my age, cause then I would have to kill you:ninjafigh. But I did see the adult classes,I went to some. why do you ask?
I’m most curious about their Muay Thai program. Like, who teaches it, and what experience they have.
Well First do you check out their website, Second the “Masters” Are a Mr. Spoth and a Mr. Berger, the gray belt turned black Mr. Ventura. But that was two years ago,but i doubt they changed anything.
I saw the website, I saw those people on the website, but there was no info about them. I’ve heard of Mr. Spoth, but I don’t know too much about him, and the other instructors, I don’t know anything about.
You say that they told you that you signed a 2 year contract, but you didn’t? And what was the “more money” that they charged you?
Also, you said you liked the place, so the black belts that were there you think were good quality other than your neighbor?
Yes I signed a 2 year contact, because they said I could leave anytime and get my money back. What I meant was that I found out was if I left they would still charge me money as if I was there for the full 2 years!
They almost demanded your bank account when you first sign up. As for liking the place, I did but only for first few months, but then I begin realize it had traits of a mcdojo.
No the Gray Belt part is a example of how the place was a belt factory. Any other questions?
It sounds like you didn’t understand the contract that well. Maybe whoever you spoke with didn’t explain it to you well enough. They should be clear, but its your responsibility to know what you are signing.
I haven’t heard of anyone else complain about it, so I’m hesitant to jump on your bandwagon. Where else have you trained?
You don’t understand what I’m saying I knew I was signing up for 2 years. What I didn’t know that that they’ll be charging me the full 2 years even if i left. It didn’t say anything about that in the contact.
Of Course, no has complain about them, because there making sure that the students don’t actually know that they suck. They have the parent type who have their kids just in there just to make them feel good. Even though they know their kids suck. They did everything, they only held tournaments in their school, they gave stars and tape stripes put on their uniforms if they did good. And finally they gave a man with no martial art background or any other belts in any style. He was awarded a gray belt and taught classes. Then within 6 months he tested for his black belt. Only respectable Martial Artists would know that their frauds.
I’ve trained in Traditional Isshin-Ryu Karate for 7 years at a school called Westren New York Karate Center and I’m testing for my 1st degree black belt in the spring of next year.
Usually a contract means that you are bound to it.
If it is a McDojo, it probably works well in Buffalo, because that’s what the majority of the people in this city respond to. I think instead of having such a problem with the Training Edge, put your efforts into promoting good schools. I’ve heard good things about Kin-Tora and Buffalo Training Center, so why don’t you try those out.
If you are already training karate at a good school, why did you go there?
I’m not looking for a new school. You have a good point, Buffalo does have a lot of mcdojos. I had some creative differences with the grand master at my old school so I left, but when I came back everything was alright.
2,000 Years?
Their Website banner states:
“OUR TEACHING METHODS MUST BE GOOD, THEY’VE BEEN AROUND FOR 2000 YEARS”
CharlieWoopAss2,
Did they ever explain that lineage history to you?
No they said nothing about that, the only time I read that was when I went on their website. But they always sat down the kids for five minutes or longer during classes for life lessons as taught by the “teacher”.
