The rum/ron thread

I am totally not the most fit person to start a thread about rum, given that I’ve only started drinking liquor a couple of months ago, but hey, how come there are threads about whisky, gin, beer, etc. and none about rum?

So, in this thread we shall discuss experiences with quality rum.

My journey has only just begun, but it had a nice kickstart, as I had my first glass of rum right in the Carribbean, lucky me…

Downside is after returning to Central Europe I am left with a hobby that costs about 5 times more here than it cost over there…

Anyways: I lost my rum virginity to the Dominican Brugal Extra Viejo.

While there, I also tried Brugal Anejo, Blanco, Barcelo Imperial, white and anejo Bermudez, Atlantico Private cask.

After my return I tried as many as I could in bars (Zacapa 23yrs old, Diplomatico reserva exclusiva 12yrs old, Sailor Jerry spiced, some Captain Morgans, several Abuelos, several Appletons, Matusalem Gran Reserva, a couple of Havana Clubs, a few Flor de Canas, Legendario Elixir (not pure rum, rather a liquere, very sweet), Pyrat XO, Botran, Millonario 15 and XO, Bacardi 8, Cartavio XO).

I’ve had a couple of white and overproof rums and cachacas as well, in mixed drinks mostly.

What I had/have at home as whole bottles: Brugal Reserva Anejo, Brugal Extra viejo (about half a bottle left), Barcelo Imperial, Dictador 12yrs old, Santiago de Cuba Anejo, Pampero Anniversario, Mount Gay Extra Old (freshly opened).

Retrospectively, I made up pretty fast for the 36 years of not drinking…

My favourites so far are the Diplomatico 12 yrs old, Pampero Anniversario, Millonario and Dictador 12 yrs old. Pyrat XO was very nice too.

I prefer to drink ron puro, sometimes adding a drop of water or, rarely, on the rocks.

The price for good rum here is a pain in the ass though. In the Dominican republic, a liter of good, aged rum was about 10 dollars, 8 euros. Here we start at about 30 euros and go way hiiiigh. Damn.

OK, what about you guys, which rum do you prefer and why?

Didn’t see the number 151 anywhere in your post.

Drink with caution.

In fact, just buy a cheap one, mix it with Orangina and enjoy!

I did mention overproof rums, though…

In fact, I read your post first thing after returning home from my friends place, where we had marvelous steak of Uruguay bull, Rioja red wine (Beronia Crianza 2009 by Gonzalez Byass) and, later on finished a bottle of Zacapa 23 and finally had a great caipirinha made with Bermudez 151. 70% alcohol content…

My Spanish is almost zero, but I understood a couple of warnings on the etiquette about the content of the bottle being highly flammable…

You probably shouldn’t be drinking 151 on its own, there’s no point. Makes for a great kicker in mixed drinks, though. I have a lot of fun with Kraken dark rum, and I’d like to pick up a Rhum Agricole one of these days… The one rum I’m really solidly behind, at this point, is the Flor de Cana 4 year white rum. Still tasting to figure out the rest.

Kraken has one of the most beautiful bottles ever (and I am looking forward to tasting it soon)…

After half bottle of the Mount Gay Extra Old I begin to understand just how great that rum is… I love it.

Made a short round trip to Prague this Saturday and picked up a 0,75l Barcelo Anejo for quite a good price at a small Asian shop. Hopefully it is not Czech-made, hahaha.

Malibu with pineapple is obviously the manliest drink ever.

>.>

On a more serious note, Captain Morgan Black is pretty good IMO. I don’t really drink rum straight so a little Captain Morgan and Coke with lots of lime is my go to drink if I cant get a kick ass Mai Tai.

Yeah that bottle is sweet. Let me know how it goes down.

i still giggle whenever i drink mt gay rum. teehee.

Havana Club 7 years.

Definetely worth it.

If there is no Havana, Brugal, Barcelo or Matusalem.

The Kraken is a great dark rum. Sweet, complex mollases flavor and very smooth for it’s proof. One of the better tasting Black Strap styles I’ve had.

Would probably make a fantastic grog. (Rum, water and lime)

Since you’ve already gotten into the aged rums (like most hard liqours these represent the finest offerings in the rum world AFA character, flavor and smoothness) so I’ma have to steer you in another direction for new and exciting…

BEHOLD; THE MOUTH OF MADNESS! (160 proof)

I see this one everytime I walk into the liquor section in Tesco, but I avoided it, because it is Austrian made and I somehow feel like it would be a cheating on my (caribbean) rum journey…

I’m not even sure whether it is a sugar cane spirit. Local (Central European) rums, which were forced under EU regulation to stop using the name “rum”, are usually coloured and flavoured spirits of other than sugar cane origin.

I might use it to give that extra thrill next time I serve some crepes though…

Tasted a 12 yrs old Eldorado during a recent rum tasting I was invited to, which included 5 rums and this was the only one I haven’t tried yet (the others were Bacardi 8yrs old, Dictador 12yrs old, Pyrat XO and Zacapa 23yrs old).

What’s the point of burning the liquor? Is there anything added (before or afterwards)?

What? Nobody drinks rum anymore? Come on, people!

I took the last bottle of a 12 year old Ron Bermudez anniversario on my recent trip to the bottleshop. A nice memory of the Dominican republic, where I learned to enjoy rum. Although back there we drank mostly Brugal.

This one is really a treat, for a relatively good price, even here, in the heart-of-Europe (I payed 30 euros for the bottle).

I don’t often buy rum, but this is good straight/neat.

Product of: Mexico
Aged: 20 years (Solera method)
Price: $39
Alcohol: 40% ABV
Context: Premium Aged Rum
RG Rating: 8.5

I think I have found my new favourite rum. I admit, I bought it because I fell in love with the bottle/package design… Then I tasted it and was blown away. Absolutely lovely, gentle, sweet taste, simply wonderful.
Ladies and gentlemen, I tip my hat to Bleeding heart rum company and their Don Papa, made in the Philippines.

Here’s a taste of the looks. Try taste for yourselves…

So Kraken is dripping at home… Not pouring, because I savour it.

It is a very fine and smooth rum indeed.

I’m drinking some Smooth Ambler Revelation Rum batch 2, which is a blend of 24 ish year old rums, non chill filtered and bottled at 99 proof. It also doesn’t have a bunch of sugar added prior to bottling, making it much less sweet than is typical. Which I love, because rum is normally too sweet for me.

That there is a great flavor that I simply cannot dance with for personal reasons. (The sugar content will turn me into a human hangover)

The best of the Blackstraps I’ve tried. It makes a fantastic Cuba Libre (Rum, Cola & Lime).

IDK about Czech made rum but just about any other craft product from Bohemia seems to be top notch. Several types of alcohol are included in that statement.
