What are your opinions on internet challenges? Do you think they are daft and imature or do you think it is sometime necesary to risk your life and freedom to kill a troll? I often notice people getting challenged on this forum. Especially noobs. But doesn’t that make you a bit of an idiot challenging someone to a fight over an internet feud? I’m not just poining the finger at this place, a lot of MA sites seem to resort to empty threatts of challenges that will never happen.
I think what gets me the most about e-challenges is that you really don’t know who you are challenging. How can you tell you will easily win? It could be a total psycho you’ve just challenged.
The reason I’ve put this in here is because I think Internet challenges should be classed as bullshido. It’s almost laughable and ruins the image of martial arts.
Internet challanges, are to me, like schoolyard challanges. Shouldn’t be made lightly.
People make them, either over temper (not always good) and comfidence, or to try to stem the tide of trolls. (…“if you don’t believe, come and try…” that sort of thing)
Depending on how they’re done, they could still serve a good purpose (not so much the fights as the challanges, inserts some tiny potential non-internetz related pressure in there, we are talking about confrontation.) but it’s so much hot air, mostly.
martial arts will allways involve chest thumping…it’s online now, but ego and temper predate youtube by some millenia. All that said, I don’t think in every case, it’s BS, and wouldn’t want to assume as much. (I just remembered the guy who burned some other dude’s trailer down, and now doubt myself)
In my opinion internet challenges are usually silly. But if I were going to challenge anyone I would be serious about it. If someone beats me at fighting there are no excuses, they were better than me. So I figure whoever loses a challenge has to suffer the burden of saying “please teach me how you kicked my ass, because I’m obviously not as good as you”.
So win or lose it’s a good thing. I’ve always been taught that challenging your training partners is your responsibility, because if you don’t challenge them properly, it’s your fault if they get hurt in a street fight.
Simple. You are making a large generalization of a relatively minor incident.
Internet pissing contests are stupid. Funny thing is the recent spate have all been issued off site then brought here.
Also, prove the noobs that get challenged. Do their belief systems get challenged, yes
Everything else are throwdowns. You want to talk big and be a badass fine. Here we are going to ask you to show up to a controlled environment, for sparring, to prove your assertions. Noobs don’t get challenged trolls get challenged. 90% of trolls get nuked and back down.
People here to learn get educated.
People here to make generalizations end up in trollshido.
I don’t know what incident you think I;m reffering to. I’m not talking of anything specific. I’m just talking in genral. On a lot of MA boards chjallenges go off. But on here it seems to be all the time. There also seems to be a huge thing about posting your details and whatnot. Surely if people want to remain anonymous then they have the right. That’s the point of the internet. mjaybe someone wants to make a point but does not want people knowing who they are? What’s wrong with that?
This is a site about MAs. Of course there are going to be “internet challenges.” Sometimes they actually happen, where real people meet real people and fight. You know, like when you dream of having friends. Except with fighting.
I’m obviously new to this but it didnt take me long to figure out that if you had a problem with someone you could meet them at one of these Throwdowns. Correct me if I’m wrong. Though these throwdowns are more of a friendly gathering, I hope.
I was surprised when I saw the video of some girls going to a parking lot to fight some old dude and a punk. Would a throwdown be an unacceptable event for this kind of thing?
I was also unaware of varrots until now. Although I aspire to be comepletely useless, it is the nicest compliment I’ve heard in a while. " the knotty pines wood is useless. It will not be cut down, but remain forever."
You’re missing the point. The details are for supplying credentials, so everyone knows whether or not you’re worth listening to if you start spewing crap all over the forums, or if you make “a point” on a topic that requires experience as a pre-requisite.
Steps:
Lurker posts something stupid in reply to a constantly debated topic.
Forum member questions validity of statement.
Lurker talks about experience, schools, meeting ‘master’ of style/technique in question.
Forum member presses on, asks for names, pictures, school, other proof.
Lurker ignores request, continues talking about military experience. travelling to thailand, brazil, and israel to train in “Muy Tuy,” “Brazillian Vale Jitsu Tudo,” and “Krevmega.”
Everyone on forum issues E-challenge, either to press the proof issue, or to make lurker…
Exasperated, Lurker talks more about experience, age, and how everyone on forum is too much of a pussy to meet with him in person.
More people issue threats/challenges.
(Mod runs ipcheck, finds out it’s a dummy account/Someone finds lurker’s ninjer-themed myspace page).
Lurker gets banned/leaves.
For instance, most of my BJJ knowledge so far has been from second-hand knowledge (ie, not from certified instructors), so when someone is talking about grappling, and they seem to know what they are talking about AND have the credentials to prove it, I shut the fuck up and listen.
Basically, talking about your huge e-penis without a picture or video of that supposed monstrocity will get you labeled as a troll real fast, and the supposed “point” you had to make about a topic will be lost in the garbage heap we call “Trollshido”. So if you want to stay anonymous, don’t bother posting. If you don’t have the credentials/been to a TD so people know who you are, know when to back down, or else someone will call you on your shit.
“Nub until proven Leet,” I believe is the term. I’m still a nub as far as anyone else is concerned, but I stay out of things I don’t have a clue on, so there’s no problem.
A damn good policy to operate by if you are even half serious about Bullshido.
As far as mr. lumberjack goes…
The odds that any seasoned military personnel like an ex-SAS would come on to a MA forum and start blabbing about it so blithely, and be so reticent to show proof, is as good as Bruce Lee coming back from the dead to kick Ashida Kim in the nuts. Mr. lumberjack, your bullshit sticks out like a nun at a roman orgy. Please do us a favor and promptly commit seppuku. :seppuku:
