So on Friday we all hit the mats for some No-Gi techniques and rolling; usually my favorite part of the week. Unfortunately, this week I ended up with the nastiest mother fucker I have ever smelt. Seriously, his stink literally broke my focus. I literally couldn’t concentrate at all. I smelled like shit… like actual human shit.
Don’t get me wrong, an MMA academy is going to have its share of bad smells, but this was simply overpowering. I could actually still smell it on my fucking rashguard all night.
Anyway, how do I avoid situations like this? Should I just flat out tell him, “Bro, you smell like shit. Go home and wash.” and just refuse to roll with him? He’s a higher belt and my instructors seem to pair him with me a lot these past few days.
Dude could just be a guy who natuarly ‘stinks’ when he works out. Most of the time though, its hygeine and diet. I would take him aside after class and ask him very politely “did you forget to wash your rash guard or something bro? There was a realy strong funk about you today” if this isnt a hint enough for next weeke approach your coach and tell him its a safety issue.
I had a roomate like this once. He stank like shit, but he washed all the time. Later in life I learned that working in a biolab can cause you to become ‘colonized’ by bacteria. When this happens, you will stink no matter how much you wash. No amount of washing will clear that up. It takes large dose antibiotic therapy.
I think you should discretely tell your coach that you would like to not pair up with him for personal reasons. Your coach will already understand why. If it ever becomes and issue with stinky, you can explain the odor just made it unpleasant to work with him.
I also take issue with guys who are excessively sweaty (so that you are soaked in your partner’s sweat, he’s impossible to get a grip on, and the beads of sweat drop from his head into your face/mouth) while grappling. That and the guys that fart with every transition. I’ll usually suck it up once or twice (we’ve all farted), but after that I bring it up with the partner as respectfully as I can. Or I’d offer to pitch in for some gas-x and botox.

Sweaty and stinking are two different things.
If you rolling around w/ grown men, especially in a place that gets hot (I’m in NC and our gym is hot as fuck), you have to expect to be sweated on. That’s just plain and simple. Does is suck to have a guy sweat on your face? Sure. But that kind of goes w/ the territory. If you don’t want someone to sweat on you, take up another hobby.
I’m one of the sweaty guys. Sorry guys, I can’t help it. There’s literally nothing I can do about it, it’s how my body is. It’s not a conditioning issue, I’m in quite good shape. I’m not a spazz, I’m not over-muscling. I just sweat, a lot. I can, quite seriously, drop 8-9 lbs in a 3 hour practice during the summer.

Slamurai, ask yourself this question, does this post have anything to do with technique? No?
Then why the fuck did you post this thread in the technique forums?
You’ve been registered here longer than I have. You should have posted this in YMAS. Maybe you’re stupid, maybe you’re lazy, I don’t care as long as you stop shitting up the technique forums with threads that have zero to do with technique.
Really, what is so fucking hard to understand about that?
It doesn’t (as far as I know). It stops sweating at the point of injection. But hey, I haven’t explored the option of injecting it into one’s netherregiouns,
And I’m not inconvenienced by the usual amount of sweat. I’ve been rolling for long enough to know what to expect. The topic was regarding partner hygeine/etiquette in certain, unusual cases.
I understand that some people just sweat a shit-ton and they can’t do a thing about it. In fact, as they get in better shape, they’ll sweat even more. I’m just saying it’s not very fun for me, and given the option, I’ll grapple with someone a little less…wet.

Sure, just point me to the “People Smell Like Shit” section and I’ll be happy to post there. Seriously, some of you forum leaders need to be mule-kicked right in the fucking ballbag for your intolerance.
It’s not like I posted it in the Adv. BJJ Section. I posted it in the Basic M.A. section, and as I see it, someone smelling like actual human shit is something pretty fucking basic. Now if it was just something like, “Oh, he smells when he sweats.” then yeah, I wouldn’t have bothered. But this stench was strong enough to make me rethink every move I made, for fear of getting another whiff of him; and that was at the core of my question.
Seriously, this question is as valid as one about training methods or flamingo Q-guard. If someone smells like boiled shit and penis chowder, should it affect your performance?

It should have been in YMAS. Generally anything fecal related goes there. Yes, some of the Mods are heavy handed but for Christ’s sake there are stickies describing exactly what each area is for. Nobody reads them. If in doubt throw it in YMAS with a “I was going to post this in ____” at the front. If it belongs there someone will move it.
Me too. I start sweating during warmups, no matter how fit or unfit I am, and I keep on sweating. I’ve started bringing a change of t-shirt for the grappling, but that gets soaked in minutes too… I always feel quite bad about it, but I can’t seem to help it
