Shooto comes from Catch

‘Shootfighting was created when a German wrestler, Karl Gotch, was teaching “real Wrestling” or “shooting” to a group of Japanese elite fighters. Two of the fighters, Masami Soronaka (karate, judo and sumo) and Yoshiaki Fujiwara (muay thai/kickboxing and judo) created what was called UWF or “hard style” in Japan…’

Which means that…

  1. We do get to see ‘Catch’ in MMA.
  2. If you want to learn ‘real Catch’, you should find a Shooto or Pancrase gym.
  3. Catch does not ‘make BJJ look like childs play.’ (Though Shooto is all good.)
  4. Matt Furey and Tony Cecchine are even more full of shit than we thought.

If Tony’s not legit where did he gather and learn all these techniques that everyone admits are creditable? Not saying he is or isn’t but this is a question that has not been answered in most of the information I’ve read.

Shooto is not a style its actualy the format of a match. SHOOT being a live match. SHOOTO is the japanisch way of saying SHOOT.

Many pple, including pple Tony had claimed to have trained under, have said that he has been inflating his experience and training. Ask Jake on Groundfight.com he dug up a couple of things on that and posted them awhile ago.

I am training shooto and bjj here www.paraestra-hakata.com

Shooto is great - it’s basically kickboxing and jiu jutsu.

Amateur shooto comps are standup kickboxing and no striking on the ground. so its basically a kickboxing and subgrappling match. You move up to pro and fight strikes on the ground too.

awesome fun to train. im finally doing MMA…

Sweden + Shooto, ey? If you can take classes with Joachim Eckberg, certainly do so.

I believe that it’s still possible to get training in the original catch-as-can (Lancashire wrestling) style in Wigan, England. The famous “Snake Pit” school, which I think Carl Gotch was associated with in the '60s, is no longer there but some of the old-time coaches are still involved in the local amateur wrestling scene.

Internationally, some older pro-wrestlers who were active in catch/shoot wrestling during the '60s can still teach a few tricks.

Mark Flemming- Lou thesz
Dick Cardianal and Billy Wicks- Carny style catch
Aspull olympic gym in wigan- taught Karl Gotch and many others.

Don’t ask me if there is any difference in style, I don’t have a clue. But from what I hear all of these guys are as tuff as nails.

It is awsome fun to train. More fun than an overdose of caffiene! :new_all_c

As Asia said, it’s not a martial art, it’s an event, like Vale Tudo. I don’t know how other Shooto gyms train, but at the place I go the instrcutor is an ex-shooto and other NHB event fighter who teaches whatever he knows that works and is compatible with Shooto’s ruleset. (sometimes we got shown how to do it on t3h str33t as well). That means boxing/muay thai for standup, with wrestling/JJ for takedowns and greco/sub/BJJ for the ground. My only gripe with Shooto training is that we don’t train for lava on the ground.

I find this picture humorous.

Would somebody please paste some “owned” text onto it. I’m too lazy.

And maked “OWND!!1” be coming out of the dude on the left’s face.

Thanks for giving me something to do.

That’s from a link I posted to the Hart “Dungeon” eh?

I’d pos rep you if I could.

I like it, it’s gigglicious.

I believe that Billy Robinson (who worked with Sakuraba for a while) trained at the Snake Pit.

Of all the modern mma fighers, Sak had the most “catch-like” style–he used the double-wristlock/Kimura hold all the time, he didn’t bother with the guard, etc.

What about Billy Wicks or Gene Lebell? they’re good at Catch, of course.

Shooto comes from Catch; in other news, wine comes from grapes!

…and?

I thought everyone and their dog knew this.

Well sorry, thanks for the post, I’m sure someone did not.

Tony’s DVDs are good.
I haven’t watched them for a long time now though mainly because I got into BJJ gi fighting. And catch is no-gi based.

The main problem with Catch is that you can’t learn an art from DVD. There only seem to be 3-4 guys in the world that even publicly proclaim to teach it. Unless you’re close enough to study with one of them (and for this argument ignoring who is real or fake) your better off just going to the closest BJJ school.

Tony’s DVDs do have some really good tips and principles though that will (and are) slowly being incorporated into mainstream submission grappling.

Another good link, this one works. The one above doesnt seem to work.

Shootfighting is awesome, aweome MA to learn. Gets you in damn good shape too.

Fixed the link.

‘There only seem to be 3-4 guys in the world that even publicly proclaim to teach it. (Catch)’
If there are only like three or four Catch gyms in the world, how often do they organize tournaments/matches?
