I’m just curious what others think on this matter.
Is training in training which is better going bear feet or wearing shoes?
When I say shoes it could be any shoes. Although I’m wondering if anyone is training wearing wrestling shoes?

i tried a BJJ class in bear feet and ended up going back to using shoes. Are shoes legal in bjj competition?
I get scolded for boxing bear foot when I spar with the boxers at my gym. I should probably get some boxing shoes, but I keep thinking “naw, I’m a thai boxer, we don’t need no stinkin’ shoes!”.
Wrestling shoes should be legal but you’re gonna get ankle locked if you wear them.
Wrestling shoes.
Better grip on the mat :occasion1
Shoes
I have been debating on switching shoes for quite a while now. I currently use Nike cross trainers, and I have gotten used to them, but I don’t think they are the best footwear for what we do at the club… stepping and sliding across hard floors, holding a horse stance etc. I don’t think there is any store in my city where I can get a pair of martial arts shoes, so I have just procrastinated and not done anything.
My sifu even mentioned a while back that my shoes were making me slide a bit when I was trying to hold a stance and that maybe I should get a new pair. I was thinking about wrestling boots, but we don’t use mats alot, so I am not sure.
Anybody know of an on-line store I might be able to check out ?
I have been going barefoot for months since I lost ONE shoe.
The bottom of my feet are almost like leather and the big toes are perpetually peeling like thick, fibrous onions. Everything from carpeting to ring canvas, etc., have been handled with bare feet.
I love Fei Yue shoes. You can get them on ebay and at http://martialartsmart.net/ I can’t vouch for martial arts mart, but when you search for “fei yue” be sure to try it without the space or else you may miss it.
The only problem is that the rubber soles are a bit soft. If I train 5-7 hours a week I start seeing holes on the bottom in about 4 months.
The last place I trained JJ we used all sorts of gear, including wrestling shoes.
My current place we go barefoot.
Personally I prefer using the shoes- much better traction.
And the shoes are good protection against the broken glass, dogshit, and lava that we have laying around.
yeah thats what my teacher told me.
Shin stomps can be brutal with shoes on. Without, they are just annoying.
When grappling or kickboxing, I go without. When stickfighting, knifefighting, or stand up boxing, I go with shoes. Catching a vertical stick strike to your toe sucks.
I actually prefer skateboard shoes for martial arts training. They are quite light, and have a nice amount of grip for hardwood floors. I’ve used both Vans and Airwalks, and have liked them both.
People, there is no such thing as wrestling boots, call them shoes. Let’s not feed the “…wrestling and Bjj is teh ghey.” trolls any more than we do already.
I wore wrestling shoes for three years (I have prehensile toes) until a brown belt, who I look up to, told me that I’d never be a ‘real’ Bjj guy until I went barefoot. I do admit that some techs are easier without shoes, for example, the whole foot-in-the-belt series of techniques isn’t happening if you’re wearing shoes.
If you’ve never practiced kicking with your shoes/runners on your in for a big surprise if the need arises.
I go both ways…and I practice both bare foot and with different types of shoes (mostly running shoes but I also wear skater shoes or cross trainers) I haven’t tried wrestling “boots” (I had to do it, jnp), though.
I have girly sissy feet, so I get blisters when I spar too much without shoes on, but I always roll with no shoes on, because I also have monkey-like feet.
Bare feet. KTFO with t3h Stinky.
I wear shoes when I kick my heavy bag at home and it feels exactly the same as when I’m kicking without shoes at my school. So I really have no idea what you’re talking about.
I train w/ shoes.
But I do use my bear feet whenever I want to attack campers or snatch salmon out of a river.
I’m a fan of the Feiyue shoes as well. I wear feiyue sometimes, running shoes sometimes, barefoot somtimes.
Hey…it’s almost like I can’t use the excuse of not having the right equipment to not train…
Feiyue’s wushoes are awesome (for wushu)
He must kick with his toes or instep. It makes zero different for me because I’ve always been a shin-fucker. I’m a little slower, but more power, that’s all.
