Something we study at our school is grappling in closed spaces and also with weapons. Pirates always had a small knife as a backup and we do alot of grappling with a knife to stress the reality of weapons on the ground.
It interesting that modern grappling arts seem to neglect this??
I have noticed that many people are starting Pirate Combat schools with no formal training and getting their techniques from watching Jonny Depp and Pirate of the Caribeen.
As a Black Belt in Pirate Combat and have trained personally with the Legitimate Shihan Simon Tang, I would like everybody here to help shut these fakers down!!
All I can suggest (other than a keel-haul - yaarrghh) is that is they are using Pirates Of The Caribbean images etc in their advertising material, email Disney.
They usually jump on unauthorised use of any of their property.
This may seem a little underhand, but I believe that’s the Pirate way.
Good point, but the tevhniques on the pirate movies are nothing like correct Pirate Combat Training. True Pirate combat is quick and nasty, no swinging of swords and jumping from ropes… and we never get the girl
Grappling arts as we usually think of them are generally trained for sport purpose with self-defense as a fringe benefit so there isn’t much of a point in focusing on knives. I’m pretty sure the average person only gets into a bar fight every 10 years on average, so the chances of going to the ground, much less a knife being involved, are really very, very low. And on top of that if someone pulls a knife while you’re both on the ground, chances are high that you’re going to be severely injured anyway.
PS - you should practice with a live blade in your grappling - it makes it much more real. And wear an eyepatch at the same time.
Grappling with a live blade really increases your ability to control your opponent. Your game changes when you go from slack “sport” control to serious control. You can build apon the subtle game that makes BJJ so good to a game that makes Pirate Combat probably the most amazing art on this planet
Ok, but as you said, they’re cashing in on POTC’s popularity, so I guessed they’d be using images etc… take that away, and you just have a guy dressed as a pirate waving a sword, right?
Knives and going to the ground. the probability is high but it is not as important as having a broad range of training.
…and yes, When I teach Pirate Combat we do grapple with live blades, just like in BJJ when you know the heel hook is there and you dont use it … we avoid killing each other
but for my I love it for the practical combat… I mean we have weapon grappling . I would to see Royce Gracie rock into our school and see how he would go passing the guard with a Cutlass at his throat
but we are the real deal… and Pirate Combat is about to rock the world
