China’s kung-fu masters stun IT gurus
Beijing, Sept. 27. (PTI):
China’s world famous kung-fu masters at the Shaolin temple in central China’s Henan province have surprised the country’s information technology gurus by their knowledge and use of the computer and cyberspace.
The monks at the Shaolin temple hosted top leaders of China’s IT industry yesterday for a meeting to discuss how to help the country’s fledgling IT industry and build a good image abroad.
At the meeting, the Shaolin monks revealed their hidden side - as skilled users of computers and the internet.
Master Yongxin, head of the Shaolin temple, also delivered a key-note speech at the meeting, Xinhua news agency reported from Zhengzhou, capital of Henan province.
The Buddhist monk made a powerful presentation, with the help of a projector, about the website of his temple. “The IT leaders were surprised to learn that Shaolin’s website came into operation in 1997, before China’s major portals had started business,” the report said.
The IT leaders were also told that many Shaolin monks use the internet to gather information and communicate with the outside world.
The Shaolin temple is internationally famous for the dazzling martial arts of its Buddhist monks in “The Legend of Shaolin” and other movies and publications.
When I was in Macao, I went over to Taiwan and they said that, there were no more Shaolin MA in mainland china because of the communists.
They said that the temple in Taiwan is the only one because the monks fled china to Taiwan.
In the book “Comprehensive Asian Fighting arts” Robert Smith says more or less the same thing.
I am wondering if these “monks” are really just Wushu performers.
I read in Black Belt some time ago that there are some wushu performers posing as authentic monks, touring the US doing impressive demos, opening schools, etc. I wouldn’t know which from which…I think that is SICK by the way.
I would really like to see some of these authentic monks.

Well,i havent seen one,so cant be sureBut learning those contemp. wushu and went for a fight would surely get squashed by a street-hardened thug easily
Edge, yes, I saw something similar. This particular monk was married and had children also I believe. Is that typical for the Shaolin monks to marry, etc.?
Well, thanks to Shaolin being popular again, there are plenty of fake monks around, most are failed Wushu folks who realise that shaving their head can mean big bucks.
There are a few ways to distinguish whether your monk is real or fake, first, check their monk name. Every real monk will have a “Shi” “Generation” “Name” , for example, my good friend Shi (Shijamouni, the first monk) Heng (36th generation) Ming (name). The second is to judge them from their form knowledge, every monk should know the 5 Jiben Taolu, trust me, if you see these forms, they are very different to contemporary Wushu forms. The 5 Jiben Taolu are very powerful, the first 2 being very very very fast, the 4th being very slow and the fifth being a combination.
Next thing is to judge how they perform the techniques, Shaolin forms generally travel in very linear directions (there are exceptions like Da Lohan), you can tell whether your ‘monk’ is a Wushu guy or a real monk from watching how he does certain moves, for example, the Shaolin roundhouse is performed completely differently to the Wushu roundhouse, the Shaolin roundhouse closely resembles the Thai version, albeit with a different chambering motion.
I heard from my friend Heng Ming that there are now 9 monks in UK! NINE!! Awesome.
