Seventy-three-year-old Grandma is Black Belt and she Fights Hard!

(CBS)_For many, retirement is a time to take it easy after decades of hard work. But a 73-year-old Oklahoma grandma is doing just the opposite by kicking and punching her way to a black belt.

Jeannie O’Connor took up martial arts training at the ripe old age of 68 and has since earned a second-degree black belt. Her goal is to earn her fifth degree black belt by the time she turns 85.

O’Connor signed herself, her daughter and her grandson up for classes five years ago thinking it was something they could all do together just for fun. But instead, the fun turned into a passion and a desire to rank at the top.

Everyone at the Beavans Martial Arts School where she trains calls her “Mama”. She takes strength training, kick boxing and Tae Kwon Do, which she says has helped her maintain her bone density.

O’Connor also says the kick boxing has improved her cardiovascular health, and she’s busier now than she’s ever been in her life.

YAY old people! Video don’t show much unfortunately

Just saw that on yahoo. Did they say what style she did?

Edit now that I read your post, never mind:qswim:.

Fantastic.

I know Sensei Bob Green, who gained his 4th Dan at 80 years or so. He told me that started JJ on his 60s, as he’d Retired and was under his wife’s feet (see, that’s why blokes of a certain age get themselves a Shed) so he went along to the local JJ school. They were a bit sceptical especially bearing in Mind his age, so they asked if he’d any MA experience. Sensei Bob explained that he had been a Karate Dan having learned in the 1960s from Tatsuo Suzuki and trained with Ticky Donovan, Peter Hooton and more. Good Lord. The training in those days must have been “draconian” and you’d never get away with it today. Anyway, he was in and has been ever since.

They are examples to emulate for anyone (and that includes me).

Our Club sponsor is a 74 year old who still does BJJ and rolls. Its hilarious when he submits dudes who are 50 years his younger and are state champion wrestlers.
