See if you can dodge my SPEAR PUNCH!!!!

Just to clarify something for myself… I watched all the videos of people punching and didn’t ever see the palm turned outward, more than a bit. Somehow this conversation turned into stuff about elbows and shoulders… As I understood the OP, the punch he was taught in his boxing days involves turning the fist about 90 degrees, and the punch taught at traditional MT involved turning it 180 degrees…

This reminds me of a MT technique at my gym they call a “spear jab”. This was part of a combo we practiced once with three probing jabs, and then a really hard jab that involved rotating your arm just about as far as it could go, so if you drew a line from your pinky knuckle through your index knuckle that line would point straight at the floor.

I could see why KJ might recommend this to someone who is not rotating their fist at all for training purposes, but it doesn’t seem effective to me to punch this way for every single punch in a fight.

let me clarify something for you

  1. this thread is oooooold… leave it alone!

  2. you are a ‘muay thai noob’ therefore you don’t know 1/100th of what you think you know

  3. Then lock the thread. The whole purpose is to have a discussion.

  4. I openly admit I’m a noob. I posted because the thread piqued my curiosity, not because I consider myself an expert.

there is nothing you can add that has not already been discussed

You don’t know that. You need to open your mind. So the spear jab vs. regular jab has been discussed? I was more interested in learning than adding anyway.

OK thank you. I was wondering if it was something more traditional. My gym teaches this jab as part of a combo except we rotate our fist more than a regular jab. Then again I think my gym may have developed its own jargon. For example we call a round kick a swing kick.

Anyway, I am getting that despite earlier posts welcoming discussion that only experts are wanted. I thought that my questions were within the scope of the thread. Anyway, MMA mickey has a point that the thread is old. I forgot that on internet forums people care about threads being bumped. My original concern is that the OP’s comments were about being told to turn the hand so the palm is out. The responses were saying it is normal and backed up by video. The videos however didn’t appear to have the palm turn out very much. The “spear jab” that I was taught was the only thing I had ever seen that looked to me like what the OP described, but I can’t find video of anything like it.

Anyway, if people want this thread to die, then leave it alone. If anyone posts telling me to go away I promise I’ll reply.

If you have a genuine question, you should frame it as a question. Its when someone with substantially less experience comes in and throws in input that doesn’t add any value, and if that input sounds like preaching it is unwelcome. Welcome to bullshido btw, its harsh but if you stick around there is a lot to learn. if you have a genuine question ad you start a thread on it, given that you have searched for it before everyone will be glad to help out. MMAmickey has some good stuff to tell, so keep your ears open.

Also, necroing a thread needlessly is universally unaccepted in any forum.

OK I reread my first post and I realize it may sound preachy to someone who doesn’t know me personally. I was expressing my curiosity about the detail everyone appears to have avoided addressing since the OP’s question which sticks out to me like a sore thumb. And I say that not as an expert but as someone who was expecting to be enlightened by a response. Still I feel that I am the only one who sees this and feel stupid because I don’t think my post was needless. I have obviously not explained myself clearly, but I’m not going to try more because all the detail I added just got interpreted as preaching.

OK now I got that off my chest. I’m sorry I necroed the thread. I’m sorry my comments were seen the way they were. dwkfym your comment on the term spear jab was a bit helpful.
