SCARS
by J. Mitchell
I had seen the SCARS program on the internet and in BB magazine for a long time. I was curious, but I never ordered the tapes because they were so expensive. Then I got a criminal case where a guy had planned and executed an armed assault on a club in Northern California. To make a long and strange story short, he was arrested and his apartment in Nevada was raided. In the appartment, he had the full set of SCARS tapes. He had suposedly attended one of their training camps to prepare for his “mission.” Naturally, I had to view all the evidence (tapes) a few times over.
They appear to train in the same way Kenpo does- with a library of techniques for different types of attacks. The empty hand techniques looked very similar to American Kenpo. They strike often strike with a series of low kicks and hand strikes utilizing circular and linear action. In one of the tapes they demonstrated Grip of Death for a headlock. They also utilize some of the core principles found in the American Kenpo system. The tapes made some good points, but, I think the American Kenpo sytem is far better for the empty hand techniques, in my biased opinion.
I did view the gun techniques tape also. I thought it was very good. The tape I saw showed how to disarm a gun and how to retain a gun. They looked like practical and effective techniques.
