RUC / British LE/Military 101

Just a reference thread for useful info that an RUC guy would know.

  1. Guns, uniforms, equipment etc. The Heckler & Koch MP5 was widely used. Note the dark green “police” uniform.

  2. Riot uniforms. Perspex shields and helmets with visors - limit view. Most officers would have large trunchons (British term for battons). Some officers would have plastic bullet guns (aka Batton guns - basically a grenade launcher but firing a “rubber bullet”).

  3. Batton gun and trunchon - the batton gun in this case is a Heckler & Koch single shot one - I’ve fired one of those. The well known secret “trick” is to fire it at the ground (concrete) to get a spin on it, increasing accuracy in riot contexts. These things can be leathal at point blank (as was found) but were generally seen as under-powered.

  4. More everyday occurance:

  5. “Landy” - typical armoured landrover as used by RUC and British Army in NI.

Note the gunports. The skirts are hard rubber and primarily prevent petrol (do NOT call it “gas”) bombs getting under the vehicle. These vehicles are diesel powered BTW.

More to come.

Congradulations Andy, you’re either a protestant now, or a heavily discriminated against catholic. If your episcopal you’ve joined the Orange Order, which was heavily favored by RUC officers.

We could have you dismissed from the RUC in 2001 when they changed over to the Police Service of Northern Ireland. PSNI

Those fags at Amnesty international were putting a lot of pressure on your bosses. So you got dismissed and possibly transferred to more spooky activities.

The RUC was perhaps 8,500 officers. Hugh Annesley would have run the organization from June 1989 to Oct 1996 when Ronnie Flanagan took over until 2001.

Hey Das Moose, can one pick up a surplus RUC uniform and hat in NI these days? It might be worth investing in.
