Exerpted:

Bean convicted on all three counts against him

CADILLAC - Ronald Timothy Bean confirmed Thursday that he was a judo expert.

But the self-described “speculator” couldn’t throw off the testimony of a series of prosecution witnesses against him.

A jury of five men and seven women convicted him Thursday evening on three counts of larceny by conversion in Wexford County Circuit Court.

Jurors spent about an hour and a half in deliberations after being given the case at 4:30 p.m.

“I believe that justice has been served in a small degree,” said Mark Smathers, Wexford County’s assistant prosecutor who tried the case. “There still may be another trial in Missaukee County.”

Bean also confirmed a statement he made to Chaffee about being a judo expert. He said he was a junior Olympic champion and was preparing to fight in the 1980 Olympics that were boycotted. During final arguments, Smathers told the jury that none of the men knew anything about Bean’s stock investments and would not have given him their money if they considered it a loan.
