Review: Jiu-Jitsu Unleashed by Eddie Bravo

It’s when you escape side control by reaching down and manually pulling your far side foot and sticking it in as a hook so you can return to guard.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I had a very specific question, and I used the search function:cool:

Does anyone have an answer to the quoted question?

I’ve just gotten back to training last week at a new gym, and my new training partners just stared slack-jawed at me while I was trying to work half-guard.

Apparantly I’m “supposed” to work to regain guard while they mount and submit me.

Anyway, I got this sweep (Twist Back) to work real nicely on my first try the other day, and then another guy jumped in to stop us and asked me to show everybody what I had just done. I did a craptastic job explaining it, and then was further embarassed by my inability to demonstrate it effectively.

The issue is getting the ‘inside’ leg to the ‘outside’ so that I can hook behind the knee.

Any thoughts?

ttt…

I actually gave up and moved onto to other things after never figuring out if I was missing a technical detail to gain the hook or my flexibility just isn’t cutting it. Though, I’m still interested in the solution.

I had the same problem, but I never bothered solving it since I’ve given up on trying to use most of Eddie’s half guard sweeps.

Well, thanks for the update guys.

I’m off to train now - I’ll mess around w/ his half-guard stuff more today and report back if I make any progress.

IMO his rubber guard work is far superior to his half guard stuff. It definitely works better for me.

Haha - funny you should say that, Villain…

I went to train today with every intention of settling this problem.

Then I ended up playing mostly rubber guard instead and sinking all sorts of triangles : )

Thanks Eddie, Rubber Guard is probably my ideal offense.

As far as the 1/2guard goes… well, I can’t necessarily do the Twist Back as made to order, but I find that I as long as I can get the double underhooks, I’ve been able to work something out with a Twist Back-type motion when I disrupt my opponent’s base. In fact, it might be 1 of Eddie’s sweeps, but he’s got freakin 500 of them with tiny, tiny differences and they all have the same motion, and their own name, so fuck it - I’m getting 1/2guard sweeps, and that’s what counts.

I bought this book at Aeso’s suggestion and I still suck. YMMV

Don’t worry, I bought it before Aeso’s suggestion and I suck too.

Since someone revived this thread…I was watching the bonus features on the ADCC Best of Vol. 1 the other day and reviewing the twister set up because I was having problems with t he pictures in the book to. Long story short is I solved my set-up/leg placement problem for the twister (meaning thus far, I have been able to pull it on a completely compliant partner only).

What I did notice was the cool “half-guard bottom to take the back move” that the other guy in the vid was showing. Did anyone see this move in the vid? I’ve tried it and it is pretty tough/sloppy for me to pull (6’3"/225lbs) but I imagine that a littler guy could pull it off much smoother. The leg in between the opponents legs hooks outward and the free leg does almost like a pendulum sweep motion to get the shoulders out from under the half-guard and post up to the opponents back. Pretty cool.

Anyone here tried it or use it?

This may be a dumb question, but I enjoyed the book but I MUCH prefer the gi game. I would think his techniques work just as well with the gi, but I would like info from someone more practiced in BJJ. Thanks.

Rubber guard works even better for me with the gi since it added collar chokes and more friction. Even Eddie wears gi pants and admits they make rubber guard easier. I also do a one-handed London by grabbing the back of their collar. Lockdown and double underhooks gets me ezekieled to all hell in gi though.

Aeso,

what is a “London”? I have heard mentioned before, but dont really know what it is

BDKFBJJ,

One of my instructors uses rubber guard in gi all the time. He calls it “Devils Guard”, but it is just the rubber guard. He’s pretty good at it. Gets omoplatas and triangles of it all the time.

After months and months of trying to get Eddie’s halfguard stuff to work, I finally figured out what I was missing. You have to bury your head in their chest or at least under their shoulder area as you go for the double underhooks, otherwise as soon as you stop defending the crossface they’ll lay you flat and you’re not getting any sweeps anymore. Dunno if this’ll help anyone else, but it helped my lockdown stuff a lot.

I think that should also help with the ezekiel problem you mentioned in gi, Aeso.

I just got my bluebelt last night and my grirlfreind bought me this book as a gift(that makes her totally awesome cause she knew who he was and that I wanted it)

Best book I own and I only read it tonight. The whole thing. My game just changed and I havent even rolled yet and Im not being sarcastic.

I just used Lockdown tonight (before reading the book cause a guy showed it to me) and I was keeping guys that normally blow by my gaurd at bay. I used Lockdown tonight too against a guy who has 70lbs on me and subbed him with a kimura from it. Also I got the Apollo choke(it just seemed natural and went well with a kimura) although I finished the choke from bottom without the sweep.

Also, its frustrating as hell to the other guy when he puts weight on me and I just elevate his leg with the Lockdown.

His intro and discussion about the sport are great too.

Thats ALL before reading the book. I <3 Eddie Bravo. I dont care, I said it.

Would you guys recommend jujitsu Unleashed or Mastering The Rubber Guard? The latter seemed to have easier to use photos.

Mastering the rubber guard is put together MUCH MUCH better than his first book. I’ve got both and I like the depth and detail of the explanations in his newest book more than his first.

Bravo is in the process of replacing JJ Unleashed with Mastering the Rubber Guard and a book on his top game. MTRG contains MUCH more detail than JJ Unleashed and a few modifications.

With jiujitsu unleashed the publisher wouldnt let eddie write about his philosophy because of his facination with marijuana. As a result JJ Unleahed was only a fraction of what Eddie wanted to show the world. His new book is very complete and is one of my favorites.
