Recommend videos? No, I'd rather lecture.
Yeah, I will eventually most likely do some sort of training in a martial arts down the road, I was just looking for something I guess kind of “generic” in the sense that if I was in a bad spot at least I would have an idea as to how to go about it.

Nothing will ever be better than going through drills and training with professionals, but again something is better than nothing.

Will look into the bas rutten stuff and into the gracie combatives as well. Thank you for your advice.
It’s better to know something about whatever.
There’s this old story about a native american who always wanted something with wheels.

So at somepoint he acquired a Rolls Royce… even though the car was in perfect condition.

He had it pulled by 2 horses, simply cuz he didnt know about the ignition or other basic driving essentials.

Needless to say this was a while back

Cool story, bro.

So I assume this means, that you believe that video training is still better than no training at all. Considering this might create a unrealistic confidence in a skill set that is meant to protect you at dangerous times, I’m not sure I’d agree. Would you tie yourself to a mountain climber who had learned only from books and scale the Eiger?

Incidentally, it is really more of a racist joke than a “story.” It’s meant to showcase how stupid those Injuns are. Also, another note, if you have to explain a joke, that usually means it is a bad one.

Oh, and before I forget: on behalf of my ancestors, may I offer a very firm “fuck you.”

nope. Most folks looking for self defence material would do better spending time at the gym working on heavy compound lifts to develop raw power.

One of the guys I used to work with at a callcenter was a competitive power lifter and even though he was almost a foot shorter than me he was one of those floks you want on your side of a scrap.

Excellent I found another “fuck”, I’ll pocket it to save for later ^_^.
On your comment: Yes, if you consider it racist it WAS incidental, I simply passed on a story from Zig Ziglar which I found relevant.

On Topic: it is better to have and not need knowledge and skills, than need and not have 'em.

Granted I also do not suggest solely relying on knowledge without augmenting it with skills through consistent application (and EVEN then…only if all other options such as running away have been exhausted.)

If someone never had any social contact with other humans (say: a Feral child).
Somehow you get on hostile terms with him, Shit is serious…and about to down!
should you Pull out a gun, He’d still attack you with his mighty stick (proven in his environment)
since you only have puny object in YOUR hands.

Knowledge allows you to decide your next step… better!
You can still be a dead dumbass who thought he could do something after a few videos/books, but the %'s were indeed slightly higher than someone who didn’t do that.

After finishing one you shouldn’t feel happy about what you know, but concerned about the fact there’s still so much out there you DON’T know.

You just like me.
But I will not reciprocate.
cuz your likes are fake.

I’m well aware you didn’t make up that joke, but if you didn’t realize it was racist, then you’re dumber than I gave you credit for.

Awesome, quoting an axiom that has nothing to do with the argument you forwarded, which is: “Video training is better than no training at all.” Way to move the goalposts.

Granted I also do not suggest solely relying on knowledge without augmenting it with skills through consistent application (and EVEN then…only if all other options such as running away have been exhausted.)

Amazing… what happened to:

It’s better to know something about whatever.

Oh, right, you realized your argument sucked, so now we’re moving goalposts. Let us continue.

Knowledge allows you to decide your next step… better!

Really, you sure about that? An untrained victim of a mugging may just hand over their wallet and hope for the best… whereas a video trained victim may have confidence in a skill that does not exist, and attempt to apply it. Of course, both of these are hypothetical, and without some serious research into violent crimes, it would be really hard to prove it out.

All I can go on is this: When one joins the military, they don’t give you a book and send you out to the field. They train you, utilizing the most realistic scenarios possible, in the hopes that you might make it home alive if faced with a similar scenario.

Based on this, I would say that doing anything less than that style of training - attempting to recreate a realistic fight situation as close as possible is the only method in which you can have any confidence you might survive a real violent confrontation. Anything else (IMHO), and you’re kidding yourself.

It is fake: i dont need to read the rules in Newbie town cuz i was addressing this topic in the armory. so i object against your “infractions” ( i dont need return comments on this from you)

John: even if you know a little more you can still make the wrong decision.
Even if you Trained your entire life…you can still die from making a wrong decision.
monkeys also fall out of trees occasionally, there’s never a guarantee…

but Adding %'s in any way is always a good thing.

Seriously? Quit giving a shit about e-rep, and this place will be a whole lot better. Guess what, I’ve gotten infractions too (as has nearly everyone who posts at one time or another), don’t bitch about them.

Great, another strawman argument.

Did I say that lots of training was a guarantee of safety? No, I fucking did not. I said it might save your life.

Years of climbing have taught me the best training and equipment will not save you if you exercise bad judgement, or suffer some seriously bad luck.

That’s called EXPERIENCE, something you won’t get from a video when you can’t do actual training.
That’s called EXPERIENCE, something you won’t get from a video when you can’t do actual training.
Indeed. It’s like the youtube warriors that come to the gym after “rolling with their mates in the garage”. They “know how to do armbars and omoplatas” and can’t wait to show off what they know. They might even snag a couple of noobs with some of their “awesome moves”, but then they play with the big boys and are routinely schooled. Then again, they “tapped out a whole lot of the guys at the gym so there’s no reason to go back”.

Pussies, I call them.

What percentages are you adding up and how do you count them?

Do you use special dice?
