question: machado jj and gracie jj/bjj

I’ve seen several times on the net and here a reference to “Machado jj”. My understanding is that the Machado brothers have been among the top of the bjj food chain for over 20 decades. However, when I see the term “Machado jj”, that term seems to imply (at least to me) that this is a distinct style of bjj. I’ve searched around, and I can’t find a definite, objective answer.

Does “Machado JJ” only means BJJ taught under the Machado brothers, or does it stand for a distinct style. If so, what makes it distinct? :eusa_thin

-BJJ = Gracie Jiu-Jitsu = Machado Jiu-Jitsu…And none of them are 20 decades old…

Machado’s are under the gracie lineage. Carlos Jr. gave the highest ranked Machado’s their black belts.

Their instructor: http://www.bjj.org/a/people/gracie-carlos-carlinhos-jr.html

Machado:

http://www.bjj.org/a/people/machado-carlos.html
http://www.bjj.org/a/people/machado-john.html
http://www.bjj.org/a/people/machado-roger.html

It simply means BJJ taught under one of the Machado brothers.

Would you say that the strategies, training methods and favored techinques taught by the Macado Bros. are the same as are taught by Carlos Jr. and that Carlos’ in turn are the same as Helio?

It’s all pretty much the same.

Actually no I would not. I also disagree with Aeso. Its not all the same.

We’re probably going to end up arguing over what is meant by “pretty much”.

Negative. This isn’t the place for that. As far as is relevant to answer the OP’s question. Your correct.

For reference purposes: Shaolinz and I train under an instructor trained by Carlos Machado.

Gracie or Machado, it’s all quality Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

And there this thread should end, forever elevating it, and BJJ, above the petty lineage wars of _Ing __Un.

Amen.

I say Jiujitsu is distinct to the competitor. Take Eddie Bravo, his style is not nearly similar to that of say Rickson. I know that Helio and Royce’s objective when in afight would be to hold someone in their guard until they make a mistake and submit them, while the Machados are more agressive. The only Machado I know anything about is Jean Jaques, he and Waggney Fabbiano are my favourite jiujitsu guys to watch.

I see. The thing was that I’ve seen a few references of people studying “machado jj”, and then I found the following quote at http://academybjj.com/jj_history.html

The Machado Brothers have developed their system of Jiu-Jitsu (gentle art) over the last 25 years. The Jiu-Jitsu they learned in Brazil has been refined by their clan into a modern and unique style which is increasingly popular in the United States.

That sentenced highlighted above got me wondering whether Machado JJ stood for BJJ as taught by the Machados or if it constitute a brand new species shooting off the BJJ evolutionary tree.

That is called marketing.

I guess you could consider them “modern” in terms of BJJ because they actually use leg locks constantly.

I just put Machado there because hes my instructor and I thought it would be good to be specific with my description.

I haven’t been training long enough or with enough people to say anything about what Machado teaches compared to other Jiu-jitsu.

I think Roninpimp was refering to your 20 decades which equals 200 years. You do this every once in a while so, people not used to your writing style take it at face value.

Oh shit, my mistake :eusa_doh That was a typo, I wanted it to mean over 2 decades or over 20 years (referring to the Machados). If you hadn’t mentioned this error, probably I wouldn’t have become aware of it until much, much, much later.

Anyways, I know it’s marketing, but the question was if this was marketing based on facts (ala viagra improves your boners) or hype (ala Microsoft’s “features”)??? :eusa_thin

I always figured it was sort of a “Sponsor” thing, since there are several “Camps” that produce excellent competitors.

My instructor is from the Machado “Camp”, so when he wins tournaments, it looks good for Machado JJ.

Sort of like hearing the gyms and training halls that various boxers come out of.

i.e. “El Macho, weighing in at 375 lbs and standing at 9’11”, fighting out of Fight Labs, California,"

-Are there BJJ guys that don’t use leg locks?
