Punching the throat and neck

just go learn juko-kai if you’re that worried about it, j/k.

i’m more worried about lapel chokes crushing my will to live than getting punched in the throat.

ok guys - i believe you – now if i could only find somebody that would let me hit him in the throat or choke him out with my arm across the front of his throat … those are my friends that I train with – lessee, which one would i not care about losing…

Ezekiel chokes can get pretty throaty if you slap them on without consideration…

i have this kink on my neck rite side, and everytime i move the whole thing behind my adam’s apple something clicks and it can loosen, i dont know if thats normal because ive only tried thisAFter i got this kink. oh ya, my neck was kinda like this \ crooked. too

Someone just posted a vid of a karate chop knockout, with a doctor to verify.

choking someone out via the judo RNC, is more painful and loud then it is the BJJ way. I have been choked and choked people in both ways. When the elbow is at the throat and your bicep & forearm are cutting off the carotid arteries it produces that “can’t breathe, head feeling tight and popping, goto sleep” feeling. When the bone of the forearm is used, the persons throat becomes very agitated and a lot of coughing, wheezing, and such is produced… kinda like someone choking to death in a restaurant. I personally believe the quiet version to be more effective, but I have to say that throat crushing chokes are more fun.

As for punching someone in the neck. Dealing trauma to the carotid artery and carotid triangle area of someones neck can lead to significant damage that can end a fight, or loss of conciousness.

Both types of chokes can be effective…but cutting off the blood flow to the brain gets the job done much faster than the “judo RNC.”

Getting hit in the side of the neck makes me dizzy.

I’ve taken some hard cranks on the throat where my throat hurt for about two weeks. Throat chokes just aren’t very nice. I prefer more humane ways of putting people to sleep.

And there you go gentlemen:

Throat shots are not as lethal as you would theorize they should be. For the record I’ve hit 3 people to the throat in real life. It’s just a fucked up maneuver to do.

In my experience, it freaks people out more than anything, normally getting hit doesnt involve the sensation of not being able to breathe, even in the constricting feeling is temporary. That being said, anybody thats done any full contact sparring has probably been tapped under the chin at least once, its going to hurt, but certainly not incapacitate you.

Personally I have always looked at it as a diversionary manuever. Typically it will buy time and space, and depending on other factors, possibly a good deal of pain, but mostly time and space, at least enough to get a good shot in.

Thanks, guys, these comments have helped a lot. I asked my coach Mike Massie about it and he said there are “wind” chokes (arm, fist, whatever, across front of throat) and “blood” chokes (that shut off one or both carotids). I have been choked both ways, but the “wind” choke (gagging, plus I could HEAR stuff crunching in my throat, great sound effects  was so painful I figured it would tend to cause “too much” damage (uh, permanent or something) – but now… just gotta find someplace to try/use it – and NOT on my coach – payback would be a serious bitch.

I saw a boxing match, I think it was Ken Norton against Duane Bobbick, where Norton punched Bobbick in the throat. Bobbick dropped his hands and just stood there gagging while Norton teed off on his head. The ref stopped the fight and called it a TKO.

I got hit in the neck sparring at the last Throwdown I went to…
It stung a bit, but didn’t really faze me otherwise.
