so that’s what happens when i give someone the finger
Very interesting study. Maybe this is how others ‘sense your fear’.
why they need a study to know that ill never know, i could have told them, my tax dollars at work.
Well, yes, I mean – isn’t this all obvious? I see someone hunched up at the shoulders and looking around nervously, I kinda assume they’re afraid of something.
Yeah, same as what JKD said. Telling when people are afraid isn’t rocket science… This article is a big d-d-d-duh… :5dunce:
In social psychology there is the concept of a “hindsight bias”. That, when presented with information, one will typically say “why the heck did they study that… I could have told you that.”
The interesting thing is that people tend to have this reaction regardless of the results of the research. In tests, groups have been presented with “findings” like:
“Studies prove the phrase ‘birds of a feather flock together’”
and
“Recent research proves ‘opposits attract’”
And the reaction is that “Of course that’s true, I could have told you that.” even though the two statements are seemingly diametrically opposed.
Moral: any well conducted research like the above post is important. I’m going to have to track down a copy of it to see what else they came up with.

Oh, I actually have no objections to such studies, nor do I feel they are a waste of money or time. Sometimes they come up with conclusions that AREN’T obvious and that’s very valuable.
Some of the most aggressive people I know, are a bunch of cowards…
In dogs fear=agression a lot of the time. Why would it be different in humans?
My question is: How in the hell do these eggheads get the grant money to be able to do such innane studies where the results are clearly obvious?
Exactly. And we need to make sure that the conclusions that are obvious are really true. Common sense has no place in social sciences.

How in the hell do these eggheads get the grant money to be able to do such innane studies where the results are clearly obvious?
because us eggheads are clearly better at begging-fu than your good self, if all else fails we then mug you for your hard-earned dollars babe…
OK, here we have a website dedicated to exploding to some of the more obvious “ma myths” that abound which is currently has people going, huh, why did you need to prove that? It was obvious? Anyone else see the irony here?
Without unbiased (a loaded phrase if ever there was one) research, such self-evident “truths” such as posture communicates fear (duh) actually come under the heading anecdotal if you’d like to compare it to current bullshido parlence.
This sounds like a preliminary study, probably with a view to determining how fast such non-verbal communication is, what range it has (not necessarily line of sight for example) and is it affected by other factors (for example how does an authority figure in the crowd affect the transmission of fear). It’s also been made into a news article, which aren’t really noted for their in-depth scientific reporting…
its still anecdotal, because its sociology/psychology…both of which are soft science bullshit.
This thread reminds me of those TV news stories that they preview earlier in the evening. You know, “This is Jim Fox with Channel 11 News. Studies show that bacon may be unhealthy. Tune in for the full story on the six o’clock news!”
You know, things that are painfully obvious. Then you see some goon actually did a study on this. “A study conducted at Princeton University revealed that pork which is cooked in it’s own lard has a high fat and cholesterol content. High cholestorol can lead to heart attacks, obesity and a slowed metabolism.”
No shit sherlock. Thanks for wasting five minutes of my life that could have been spent training or playing Tenchu.
So wait, if someone is curled up in a fetal position, they may be afraid, and that may concern me? Wow…
