The mountain storm kick seems like a thai roundhouse kick, except it is thrown in a downward cutting motion instead of in a straight blast through

The mountain storm kick doesn’t sound like nothing more than a variation of the Thai round house kick. As a matter of fact, if you get the Duke Roufus MT tapes he shows a round house kick variation–created by the dutch–that applies the same body mechanics.

They teach the downward cutting roundhouse at my school.

I though Panatukuan was Phillipino kick boxing

…and interestingly enough my friends mother who lived in the phillipines
all her life had never heard of Arnis or Escrima or anything like that and apparently neither had any of my friends large extended family living in the Phillipines. There were however many popular Aikido dojos nearby…

It is just a different style and history. Kick boxing also have different names in teh Filipines due to language differences etc.

PANUNTUKAN - it means boxing in the FIlipino language . Yes there is one form called PANUNTUKAN but more of the pitfighting /street style form .

I dont know why ur friends mother never heard of ARNIS / KALI / ESKRIMA but Bruce Lee , Steven Seagal , Marc Dacascus , Chuck Norris etc had prior experience or a chance to train with this Visayan Art of stickfighting with a FIlipino stickfighter both back home or in the US .

I dont know how to upload clips in here but if anyone can show me how to , I can upload clips of No hold barred stick fighting , u can clearly see heads busted dislocated shoulders , etc aka the UFC or something but with kamagong’s(stick)

i learned the “mountain storm kick” in goju ryu… but since the teacher was heavily influenced by full contact karate, it probable that it came from muay thai or kyokushinkai (kyokushinkai calls that technique “cutting kick” AFAIK)

Pinoy power

I lived in the PI for 7 years. My mom is from the province of Bicol. Most of my mom’s side of the family still lives in the RP (Republic of the Philippines). My cousin No-Noy Distor is an actor and JKD practitioner and instructor. He started his MAs interest when my brother and I were young Shorin Ryu cats, kicking Kyokushinkai, Shotokan and Goju Ryu a$$ at any tournament we could enter :)! He’s typical amongst the Pilipinos in that he likes the raw and the real, or the pomp and circumstance. Although, the FMAs like Arnis and Escrima are popular there, the other MAs, like MMAS, Thai Boxing, Filipino Kickboxing, Boxing, TKD, Judo, Aikido Okinawan/Japanese karate and an often overlooked FMA, Silat (sometimes called Kuntaw Silat), are much more popular.

The popularity of Escrima/Kali/Arnis is unique to the States. I guess the Escrimadors couldn’t get no ducats in the PI so they came here. I saw them at a lot of open tournaments, dispaying tapi-tapi, 2-man drills and whatnot, but for the most part the Filipinos like regular fighting arts or flashy fake ones. Ones that translate to streetfighting or ring/competition fighting. Not one kid at my high school did the so-called Spanish-influenced Filipino MAs. No Dog Brothers or Cat Sisters using their awesome Doce Pares techniques to win a fight with five local cats trying to mug you as you walk down Field’s Avenue to your favorit bar/club. Then again TKD’ers use to get waxed regularly (in REAL fights), along with many a wrestler! Futility comes in many guises.

I’d better shut up. You guys at Bullshido! know what it’s all about. You know, that the real fighting MAs, ones you’ve probably never seen anyone use in a real street fight, are BJJ, wrestling, Boxing/Kickboxing, Judo and Arnis/Kali/Escrima.

Oh yeah, Yaw-Yan is a real kickboxing style. It is supposedly based on Burmese fighting, but from what I saw of it looked a lot like Muay Thai. Well Burmese kickboxing and Thai Boxing are very similar. It supposedly was handed down by the 10 Datus, who were exiled from Burma and populated parts of the Southern Philippines. Allegedly. I don’t know if it is also based on the fighting techs of a mongoose like weasel that inhabits parts of the PI. I know there is a fighting style there that is.

Traveling and seeing other ways of doing it (life)… That’s a real edumucation without speculation.

I would be interested.

Somebody help this boy to upload down all his fighting files. (I know crap about computers.)

Well, GRaMLyTZ?

If I get the chance I will , one problem is the video cam used was an 8mm and not the digital ones where u can hook up the USB cable and bluetooth .

No problem. Just keep us updated please.

Pinoy Power indeed. Yaw Yan seems to be just another variation of Muay Thai, i.e. Kyokushin and Sanda with some added goodies.
