New Humidor on the Way

Last night, I bought my first humidor for a lot less money than most stores ask. I am as happy about the purchase as one can be before receiving the goods.

I will report back after it’s seasoned and I have some cigars; in the meantime, maybe the cigar folk can gather here.

I Googled to find out what was meant by ‘seasoning’ a humidifier.

Looking at a couple of sites, there was no reason given as to why distilled water is recommended for the seasoning process.

Minerals in tap water?

I remember something about the non-water aspects of tap water potentially being a problem for moisture absorption, flavor preservation, and so forth. I ended up getting a Boveda seasoning kit so that I wouldn’t have to bother with the details.

Minerals is correct. I smoked a nice Perdomo today.

Great looking humidor. You really shouldn’t need more than 48 hours to season it.

Thanks, I love this little piece of furniture. I will calibrate my hygrometer and test humidity three times tomorrow and three times the next day. If all six reads are correct, I’ll consider ignoring Boveda’s instructions.

Do you have any idea why Boveda would suggest two weeks? By the way, the seasoning packs are 84% RH.

No idea at all. I’ve always read that you just need to soak the ceder with distilled water, let dry, and repeat once for it to be properly seasoned…or at least ready for cigars. I also think having cigars in your humidor is part of “seasoning” it…just like grilling meat is part of “seasoning” your grill.

Heh, looks like I forgot to post in this thread…

The seasoning kit worked properly, note that I followed the instructions to the letter, and the humidor holds temperature and humidity very well. I messed up and got a larger size humidifier than I meant to, but it never gets above 73%RH or below 61% RH (beads calibrated at 65% RH) so I’m safe even if I’m a little late recharging it.

I have a Nub Connecticut 354 which will sit in there for another couple of days (making sure it’s properly stored for a while after shipping), so I guess I’ll report back on Monday or Tuesday after I’ve smoked it. This will be my first Connecticut wrapper; it seems I need to move away from Romeo y Julieta Habana Reserve and smoke some milder stuff for a while. If I don’t like the Nub, I’ll try either Oliva Connecticut Reserve or Rocky Patel Connecticut next; come to think of it, Perdomo Lot 23 is also on my list.

Feel free to suggest some decent mild blends.

As far as mild Connecticut wrappers go, the Perdomo Champagne, Fuente Double Chateau, and Casa Blanca are decent. Some good mild maduro wrappers are Perdomo Lot 23, HDM Excalibur #1, and Oliva Serie G. Cigarbid is a good site to find cheap premium cigars(just don’t overbid.) Try getting sampler packs to find cigars that are in your flavor profile.

Nothing like a good cigar!

Except maybe an undead cigar that went away last November and came back for revenge this September.
