In response to Moose, Alex, Tharuz, Beorn, Moose, Tharuz, Sirc and Tharuz’s “My life is sad and bad things are happening to me” threads on LLL and CTC, I just want to gloat about how incredibly awesome my life is right now.
School? It’s going swimmingly. I’ve got a 3.6 at Michigan, I’m on schedule to graduate on time next spring. Over the past semester, I had a chance to learn to read Manchu, in a class that was held because of a petition that the professor and I had put together the previous year. There are few feelings so academically gratifying as being able to take a class that only exists because you asked the university to have it.
Women? Couldn’t be going better. I was in kind of a bad relationship (we fought a lot) at the beginning of the year, but we’re doing much better since we broke up. For the first time in my life, I’m really enjoying being single. There’s a girl I’ve been sort of seeing, but it’s a very relaxed, low-pressure kind of relationship.
The Future? I’ve started working on a Fulbright application to go to Mongolia in 2010. I plan on going there for the dual purpose of learning to read classical mongolian (I already read classical Chinese and Manchu, so this seems like the next logical step), and to study the “Three Manly Sports” of Mongolia - archery, horseback riding, and wrestling. I’m hoping to study, compete in, and get my ass handed to me in all three. I’ve never sat on a horse or held a bow before, but I’ve found a couple friends who are willing to introduce me to the basics of horsemanship and archery over the summer.
Art? I’m slowly learning to play guitar, and I’m taking a music class next semester which should help be develop quite a bit. In my spare time, I make stuff out of chainmail/scale mail/wolf’s teeth, and I become more metal by the day. I think I might make another thread just to show that stuff off.
What can I say? In this world, there is fortune and misfortune, and it strikes us all in turn. All weal gives way to woe, and then again to weal.
I’m going to celebrate my weal while I have it.
