Curious - is this in a basement? Wondering about the beams where you guys are doing pullups.
Good promotional video.
That would have been a lot better if it was under 30 seconds.
why do that keep having that dude do the “The Ring” walk up into the camera lens?
Yeah I did think it was a little long. But I guess they wanted to show quite abit. would be interesting if they made 2 versions. A short and a long one.
No idea why his doing the walk but thats the instructer Andy Roberts. Just a cool way of showing him I guess.
Not in a basement, but those beams are handy!. We hang our punching bags off them as well.

I was wondering about your gym too. That all white look is a bit off putting. It looks like somewhere they would make microchips or interigate spies.
So, which one is you?
Well It’s not bad but if I knew nothing about BJJ I might be a bit confused
My Gojujitsu club has a nice promo piece - Maybe a little too kiddie orientated but they pays the bills
MORTAL KOMBAT!!
I believe the all white look was for ninja defensive purposes. We call it “the clinic”. Any blood gets mopped up straight away or otherwise its gonna look very grimy in a few months.
Hoho -
I agree that it doesnt give much info to the unitiated. But I feel it could be difficult to promote the club and explaint he art in such a short time frame. Especially as our promo could be considered to long.
It’s ahrd especially with a specific MA like BJJ
With Goju jitsu (for better or worse) we have grappling, weapons and striking so you can do demos that match the inexperienced views of what MA should be.
As far as BJJ goes, it’s a hard call though trying to communicate what it is all about in a few minutes.
Overall, it was a good promo. Were I to offer advice to the editor, I would recommend whittling it down to about a minute, given the pace; it could have easily been broken up into two videos. I do like a lot of his shots (such as the guy bear-crawling toward the camera), I’ll probably borrow some of his compositions and editing techniques, as I’m making a few promos for my BJJ and Muay Thai schools as well.
However, I would like to see more tripod-mounted shots, such as close-ups of the trophies and medals. I understand the shaky hand-held shots jibe more with the overall style of the promo, but for stationary objects like that I would really prefer something steady. I would also recommend being more careful about getting the camera in the shot, as I saw it reflected a few times in the trophy case.
And maybe it’s just the EFP/ENG side of me talking, but I would like to see more action/reaction shots and wide-medium-close composition sequences. Start out wide, go in for a medium shot, then finish with a close-up. Speaking of which, I would also like to see more extreme close-ups, such as a person’s eyes or a hand gripping a collar or what-have-you. Shooting more with a tripod will allow for these types of shots, as well as some nifty high and low angle shots.
I think for next time, the editor should also not rely too much on excessive use of filters. A lot of the shots look nice enough on their own, they don’t need a lot of extra “flash” piled on. Sometimes less is more. Speaking of which, I think the video could have used less music and more nat sound (people talking, grunting, butt-scooting across the mat, any kind of audio from the environment). If the music level was brought down in a few shots and the recorded ambient audio brought up, it could make a big difference.
That’s all I can think of right now… if I can come up with any more suggestions, I’ll be sure to post them. Just curious, but do you know what kind of camcorder your classmate used? Looks to me like a DV prosumer camcorder, given the quality of the video and what I saw reflected in the trophy case. If you could find out for me that would be great, but if not it’s no biggie.
Thanks for the effort of a thought out critique!. Ive posted your comments to the guy who made it so hopefully have an answer to your question.
Cheers!
The spazzy nature of the video did not go so well with the compression Youtube put it through.
