A Newark thief was killed early Saturday after he got into a scuffle with a former high school wrestler while trying to rob the man, according to reports.

Cops say Gian Davis, 30, approached two local college kids at around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday and asked them for change, NBC New York reported.

When the men said no, Davis then asked if he could use one of their cell phones to call a cab.

When one of the men replied that he’d call a cab for him, Davis asked to shake the man’s hand but then tried to snatch the man’s phone, the Newark Star-Ledger reported.

Davis grabbed the man and began hitting him in the head, prompting his pal - who had wrestled in high school - to put Davis in a headlock.

Police sources told NBC the man’s grip was so strong that Davis choked to death.

The two men stayed on the scene, and when police arrived, Davis was unconscious. He was pronounce dead less than an hour later at University Hospital.

The ex-wrestler and his friend have not been charged, and Essex County prosecutor assistant prosecutor Tom Fennelly told NBC they were cooperating with police.

Davis’ rap sheet included arrests for assault and theft, and he was last released from prison on July 22.

So there you have it, Wrestling has teh deadly. Your move Wing Chun.

Choked to death? He musta held that shit a LOOOOOONG time.

Ugh… this is the scary part about the people who watch UFC and “know a few moves” but don’t understand the reality of what they’re doing. What I’m trying to say is if this guy had just supplemented his training with a little BJJ, this never would’ve happened.

And nothing of value was lost.

Good Riddance.

Davis’ rap sheet included arrests for assault and theft, and he was last released from prison on July 22.

…and he decides to take on 2 men…obviously one of Life’s Winners.

Explain where in the article it said that the men watched UFC?

Why is this the scary part? A mugger attacked someone and got killed for his trouble.

Yeah, I’m real scared about all those loose cannon wrestlers roaming the streets.

He was a wrestler, applying a headlock. Nothing was said about the UFC.

I’m not really scared knowing that some guys might try to UFC their way out of a scuffle. First of all, because I don’t go around looking for fights, but secondly because I’d rather defend myself against a shitty no-clue flying triangle choke than a guy who realizes he doesn’t know how to fisticuffs so he gets a weapon.

What I’m trying to say is if this guy had just supplemented his training with a little BJJ, this never would’ve happened.
Neither you nor I could say what would’ve happened.

Ex-High School wrestler. In other words it should have never been in the article at all. Then again the MMA ban is still up in NYC right?

So, IMO, they are looking for reactions like Noteefa’s.

I’m not sweating the kid at all for accidentally killing a guy while defending himself. It is not like he jumped on the guy and continued to pound on him while he was already out. Like in the MMA death thread.

This guy put on a head lock and probably adrenalin caused him to squeeze too hard. Shit happens. Hope they don’t charge him with anything. That would suck.

On a side note, I accidentally choked an inmate out in a headlock. It was in a chow hall and this inamte was sitting over an officer punching him in the face. The chow hall can be a particularly dangerous environment. So I ran over, put the guy in a headlock and started pulling him out of the chow hall. I thought he pulled away from me so I yoked him up harder. When I got outside, I let go to cuff him up and found out that he was unconscious. Oops!

…former high school wrestler

Hang on, isn’t that just … most young murkin men?

Anyway, if it was an attempted robbery with assault, and if he did have previous … then good riddance.
We can only hope more attempted muggings result in the death of the mugger.

Guess the mugger forgot to tap…

i know recalcitrant criminals dont attract the most sympathy, but celebrating a death like that just sounds fucked up, man.

srsly though. in my country the victims would probably be villified via media shitstorm and then charged in court. self-defense is a very, very grey area here

No one is celebrating a death. They are commenting on you get what you give. You try to rob and assault someone you just might end up dead. Even without the court record it was his own fault.

i get that violence begets violence and he should get what he deserves. just that i’d rather it be jailtime or a broken nose than death. also, “good riddance” and “We can only hope more attempted muggings result in the death of the mugger.” sound pretty extreme to me.

Social Darwinism. We’re fans.

If more muggers had the tables turned on them, maybe there would be less muggers overall. Maybe.

The death was unfortunate, and I would be surprised if it was anything other than accidental.
