The owner of a veterinary clinic at 1010 Ohio Ave. has applied for a special zoning permit to allow a pet crematorium in the back of his property, and the City Council will decide today whether to grant the permit.
Veterinarian Mike Hughes of Corpus Christi Animal Clinic said he hopes to serve his and other veterinary clinics with the crematorium, which would be the second in the city. There is a rising demand among customers who want to keep their pet’s ashes after the animal dies, Hughes said.
Neighboring business owners in the Ohio-Staples area have mixed feelings about being next to a crematorium.
Stacy Jorgensen, owner of Weapons At Hand Martial Arts Academy, located directly behind the animal clinic, said a crematorium would be an improvement. The clinic currently has dead animals hauled away for disposal, but on the day the bodies are picked up, they are stored in back of the clinic. The back of the clinic is about 30 feet from Jorgensen’s gym, which has several windows he keeps open year-round, Jorgensen said.
“Believe me, on a hot summer day, I had people leaving (because of the smell),” Jorgensen said.
