Jiu-jitsu is the most ancient martial art and is the most complete art of self defense. Its origin being quite controversial, it was first attributed to India, then China, Japan, and Brazil—where it became superior to all other styles of jiu-jitsu, making Brazil the world’s center of this precious art. The sport of jiu-jitsu brings out a competitive side where the athlete demonstrates his physical & psychological conditions, techniques, and abilities with the objective of rendering his opponent into submission. The valid moves are those which seek to neutralize, immobilize, strangle and apply any kind of pressure on the twisting joints, as well as knocking down one’s opponent by take-down. But there are non-valid moves which are considered illegal: biting, hair pulling, sticking fingers in the eyes or nose of one’s opponent, striking the opponents genitalia, finger twisting, and any other move that gains unfair advantage with use of one’s fists, feet, elbows or head. Moreover, competitions are the lifeline of the sport; it is the most important aspect for all those directly or indirectly involved. .However, victory will not be granted at any cost; fair-play must be the main guideline). Ethical behavior is what gives the sport credibility and security, which are indispensable factors to our sport. Only through this we have developed the sport in Brazil turning it into a spectacular sport. Therefore, because we hope to be part of the greatest show on earth, the Olympics, we must stay focused on jiu-jitsu as a viable modern sport. These regulations are the sports charter. They contain the for those involved: athletes, coaches, teachers, directors, and even the assisting public. Because of this, we have the responsibility to fulfill and achieve the following regulations, and only by doing so we will be able to reach our goal of making Jiu-jitsu an Olympic sport.

I pulled this off the IBJJF Website. I know that the Olympics may not sound perfect, but it is normally the best of what the World has to offer in many Sports. It also one of the largest stages in the World. BJJ doesn’t need credibility, it has enough. But, what would be peoples reasoning for not having it as an event in the Olympics?

Judo is not or was not ruined by the Olympics. Judo was ruined by the day to day operations of people stealing or wearing Ranks they don’t deserve and other political BS. Judoka that go to the Olympics are normally the best in the World at what they do and in my opinion some of the best International competition that we have in Judo.

Train Hard, Stay Safe,
Good Luck

Why do we need BJJ in the Olympics?

We have Judo.

Duh.

I thought they were considering pulling TKD? It was a few years ago but I remember reading a poll in SI where TKD was one of the top 3 sports people wanted eliminated and “karate” was one of the top 3 sports people wanted in.

So we’re gonna take Korean Karate out of the Olympics & replace it with Japanese Karate?

Yeah.

That makes sense.

Virtua fighter

Look, they even have a fighting monk!

I don’t understand why- TKD is the world’s most popular art. If people want to see awesome karate go to a full contact tourney and leave the added politcial tappity tap Olympic baggage out of it.

Full circle: Pankration back into the olympics. Valetudo rules, plus no padding, gloves or mats.

Right. Daydreaming over, back to work.

The olympics ruins every combat sport it touches and karate has been molested enough.

Yeah, what they said. Fuck the Olympics.

The whole thing with the Olympics that always confuses me is the amateur vs pro stuff. I thought the point of the Olympics was to have amateurs compete. But then the US had the all-star pro basketball team play a few years back. So if MMA ever did make it into the Olympics, could guys like Fedor or Couture enter?

I used to be a member of the USAKF - a now defunct group that was trying to move karate into the Olympics.

Based on what the higher ups said - karate was under consideration for Olympic inclusion EVERY TIME there was another Olympic games.

Karate ain’t ever gonna get there. There’s no central controlling organization - which is what the Olympic Committee requires.

And its ok. Look at what inclusion in the Olympics has done for TKD.

I think we need to forget about karate & focus on getting more important things in the Olympics.

Like getting gymnasts to compete in the original Greek uniform.

We already have a form of “tag”: relay racing. Same goes for kicking and punching (tkd and boxing) so I don’t see the use of adding more of the same.

Back to the Old Days: enter commune use of doping, sprinting in armor and good old pankration (+ revision of the protective gear used by pugilists)

my views…TKD and karate does not use the same skillset in point sparring… but either one has a HUGEASS base of pointfighters which will make either event successful, karate is much more exciting tho, JKA as compared to WTF. But most probably it’d be WKF sports style…

MMA going into the olympics would suck…even if the amatuers won the olympics, mma fans would simply argue that fedor or gsp would kick their asses, why bother watching the mma olympics…which is true…?

Do people argue that the amatuer boxers in the olympics would get their asses kicked by pacquio or mayweather? I should hope not teh argument is ridiculous.

Olympic MMA would suck because not all that many stay amatuer for long, and if they did the rules would get raped to the point of judo or boxing

Do you think bocxing and wrestling have been ruined?

dude, we need some fucking freeze tag in the next olympics.
or dodgeball
or capture the flag
or paintball

i actually think paintball would be pretty cool

awwww yeeeeee
or at least make the uniform something a little better than 1-pieces

They should take Judo out of the Olympics and replace it with a unified-rules jacket wrestling event. Judoka would have to improve their ground game, BJJ’ers would have to improve their throwing game, and Samboists would have to wear pants.

amateur boxing has been well and throuroghly raped in the anus, sans lube, by the olympics. It is now glorified point sparring.

And you can’t rape wrestling because you can’t rape the willing. Look what those guys wear… they are just asking for it, amirite?

I have to say that the fuck the Olympics statements are disheartening to see. All the bullshit rules stuff aside it is the competition that is the main heart of the Olympics. The essence of nation verses nation.

Although in today’s world we have Romanians training America in gymnastics and Brits training Belgium in Judo but still the athlete is born in the country but may train in another country because they are better at that particular sport than anyone else. Still the athlete is taken care of by the country to help represent the nation on a world stage unless your an American in a low level sport and you have to pay for your plane ticket or hope the national governing body can get the funds together to help you out unless they are in the middle of a lawsuit with another governing body to see who will control who is going to be the governing body.

Ok that little diatribe aside the Olympics should just be about the competition. They only come around every 4 years and should be a place to showcase the sport. Judo was not ruined by the IOC. The IJF has huge tournaments every year and try to make the sport better for the general public. The changes may not be the best way to make it better but after all it is a combat sport and still perceived by the GENERAL PUBLIC as barbaric.

That being said with the Judo stand up rule and and the refs calling quick stand ups because again THE GENERAL PUBLIC not liking extended ground fighting. How do you think BJJ will fair in the Olympics? When the IOC sees video footage of fights breaking out at BJJ tournaments on a regular basis how do you think this will help it become part of the Games?

The rules of a particular sport are there to just make the competition fair. If you don’t like the rules then don’t do the sport. I think that the rule in BJJ that says you can’t stand up when you want to and take the guy down again is stupid. If I don’t like the position I should be able to do what the fuck I want to get the win. Just like in track in field I should be able to trip the guy in front of me who is running faster.

We are all part of the sport and our opinions and passions are very strong. This is not the case when it comes to the people who decide on the Olympic games. They are promoters. Just like all the sleazy ass promoters we have to deal with in MMA they are no different. They are looking to make the most money from this event just like the rest. I am not going to say fuck the Olympics because of what it means for the people who participate.

BTW karate is not going to get in the Olympics until TKD is removed. I will be shocked if it makes it in.
