A Ronkonkoma karate instructor was arrested Thursday and charged with sexually abusing a 13-year-old male student, the Suffolk police said.

James N. Bonfiglio, 37, owner of the Excel Karate Academy at 856 Johnson Ave., was arrested at his home by detectives from the special victims section, the police said.

The detectives were acting on the complaint of the alleged victim, who said he was taken by Bonfiglio in July to the instructor’s home at 500 Peconic St., Apt. 8-8B, in Ronkonkoma, where he was sexually molested.

Bonfiglio was charged Thursday with second-degree criminal sexual act, second-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.

The Excel Karate Web site, which refers to the owner as Sensei Jimmy Bonfiglio, says the company was established in January 2004 in Suite #8 of the Bruno Building at 856 Johnson Ave.

Bonfiglio was held at the Seventh Precinct and was scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Friday.

Police are asking anyone with additional information to contact the Special Victims Section at (852) 852-6273.

In his statement to Suffolk police, the 13-year-old describes himself as one of karate instructor James Bonfiglio’s “cool group,” the ones allowed to hang out in the office of Excel Karate Academy and teach younger students.

“I felt it was an honor to help,” his statement reads. “Sensei Jim kind of put me in a group of kids who were his favorites.”

But police and the boy allege that Bonfiglio violated the boy’s trust when the karate instructor sent his longtime student lewd computer messages and twice lured the boy to his home for sex.

Police arrested Bonfiglio at his Ronkonkoma apartment on Thursday, charging him with committing a criminal sexual act, a felony, as well as misdemeanor sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.

He pleaded not guilty in First District Court in Central Islip Friday and was held on $30,000 cash bail or $60,000 bond.

Jerry Garguilo of St. James, Bonfiglio’s attorney, said Bonfiglio, 37, has no previous criminal record and was a frequent volunteer with organizations that work with children, including the Suffolk County Division of Handicapped Services, where he taught karate to disabled kids. “The guy comes to court with a very clean slate,” Garguilo said.

In addition to classes at his Excel academy in Ronkonkoma, Bonfiglio taught karate last year in an after-school program run by the Suffolk County Police Athletic League at a Connetquot district school. He passed a criminal history and sexual registry check before he was allowed to teach in the program, according to Dep. Insp. Robert Oswald.

At Bonfiglio’s apartment complex Friday, neighbors worried aloud about a possible threat in a community where kids roam freely among bike paths and dozens of buildings.

“I’m pretty shocked, pretty upset,” said neighbor Shari Matta, 44, whose 8-year-old son is learning karate. “Thank God my son doesn’t take classes at that school.”

Oswald urged the parents of Bonfiglio’s students to talk with their kids. “It’s really up to parents … to see that everything is all right,” he said.

Police have no evidence linking Bonfiglio to other crimes, Oswald said, while noting that Bonfiglio “has been around a lot of kids for a long time.”

Oswald said Bonfiglio was arrested after the boy, who had taken lessons with Bonfiglio since he was 7, “became more uncomfortable” with the relationship and told his mother last week. The mother contacted police.

All the charges stem from a single night in July when the boy visited Bonfiglio’s apartment, according to the criminal complaint. The alleged victim’s statement also describes an instant message with sexual content that Bonfiglio allegedly sent the boy, and a separate encounter in July at Bonfiglio’s house involving a pornographic DVD.

Police said they were examining Bonfiglio’s computer to try to determine if he had inappropriate contact with any other children.

You should read the forums on Newsday. It sickens me:

  1. Kids admitting to sleeping over his house
  2. Kids sharing a hotel room with him at competitions
  3. Special select group of kids with “special” priviledges

And this is his supporters on the forums!

And the parents let them sleep over because???

This tool bag teaches 10 minutes from my house.

PS

They found hidden cameras in his dojo… case closed bitches.

Karate teacher hit with new sex abuse charges

BY ANDREW STRICKLER
February 21, 2008

A Ronkonkoma karate instructor, already facing charges that he sexually abused a 13-year-old student, faces a new indictment on dozens of charges ranging from distributing pornography to videotaping other boys in sexual situations.

According to the charges listed on a state Web site, the indictment, handed up this week, charges James Bonfiglio with 41 new counts, some involving sexual photos and videos that police said he made of himself and children using hidden cameras in his home and karate school.

Bonfiglio’s attorney, Jerry Garguilo of St. James, said yesterday that his client maintains his innocence and has strictly followed the conditions of his release on bail after his arrest in October. He said he and his client will be in court for arraignment on Monday in Riverhead.

“He’s pretty much stayed at home,” Garguilo said of Bonfiglio, 37, who has closed his Excel Karate Academy and has lived at his parents’ home since the fall. “He’s had nothing to do with underage children as far as teaching or anything else.”

Garguilo declined to discuss specifics of the case.

The longtime karate instructor, a respected figure in the Long Island martial arts community, was arrested Oct. 11 after a 13-year-old student told his mother and then police that he’d had sexual contact with his instructor in his Ronkonkoma apartment.

Bonfiglio pleaded not guilty to committing a criminal sexual act, a felony, as well as misdemeanor sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. He was released after posting a $60,000 bond.

In the weeks after the arrest, investigators with the Suffolk police Special Victims Section said they uncovered a disturbing and extensive body of evidence: cameras hidden in Bonfiglio’s home and in a karate school bathroom, lewd or sexually suggestive computer and text messages sent to students and surveillance photos and videos of dozens of his young students. During the four-month investigation, detectives interviewed as many as 10 boys who described having sexual relationships with Bonfiglio going back more than a decade, Det. Sgt. Gene Bragoli said previously. It was unclear yesterday how many of them are represented in the indictment.

The most serious charge - using a minor in a sexual performance - carries a maximum sentence of 5 to 15 years in prison.

The new indictment

Karate instructor James Bonfiglio is to be arraigned in a Suffolk court Monday on a long list of charges of sex crimes against his students, according to a state court Web site. They include:

FELONIES:

Use of a child in a sexual performance, 7 counts

Promoting a sexual performance by a child, 3 counts

Disseminating indecent material to minors, 1 count

Possessing a sexual performance by a child, 14 counts

Unlawful surveillance, 5 counts

MISDEMEANORS:

Second-degree sexual abuse, 3 counts

Endangering the welfare of a child, 8 counts

Wow. Sickening, the evidence is pretty easy to see.
