the question is why the hell do we have weather bulletins in the first place? i mean they get the weather right so rarely that they just have to be pulling forecasts out of their ass, i think its just a scam to fill air time.

well your in a place to provide some insight into this dude, why do the news ppl get it wrong so often?
Mostly because they’ve got thread-spooge in their eyes, that’s why.
Well weather patterns are highly unpredictable things we still don’t understan fully what goes on all the time but I’ll give you a basic run down.
When you predict the weather you need to take the climate into play. Climate is about long term records, trends and averages. The “weather” is what you actually get when you take these record and the patterns working at that point in time. Climate is the synthesis of all the weather recorded over a long period of time and obviously the day to day of each year is different but patterns tend to appear just as you have seasons etc… Now you can try to predict the “weather” based on your records using computer models and ect. along with the weather patterns but things don’t always come together as the weather is a world based thing and slight unpredicted changes around the world have repercussions on other weather systems. Usually our ball park when predicting is smack on but with out a lot more sophisticated thinking and work will we ever be able to be spot on every time. Really its just natyre is unpredictable.
The main tools we use are thermometers to measure heat, barometers to measure air pressure, hygrometers to measure humidity, anemometers to measure wind speed, wind vanes to measure wind direction as well as weather satellites, rockets, radar. These along with the patterns as I mentioned before give you an indictor of thing to come.

hmm, how long do you think it will be before technology allows a consistently accurate forecast? or indeed could the answer lie in anti-technology (observation and interpretation of animals migrating etc.)?

Seeing as the world is rather large place, obviously there are huge amounts of data to process to understand on a day to day basis. The processing of this information is a huge job considering that you have to not only record it all, but interpret the information and be able to look at it globally to then really be able to break it down for weather prediction in isolated areas of the globe. Meteorology bureau’s generally don’t have access to super computers that have the speed and power to recieve all the neccesary information, if the data could be all built into one feed , which is a job in itself but being worked on around the world, so once the level of computers and our access to them moves forward and we have the resources it will move slowly. However there is alot of work being done around the globe in universities and bureaus’s so it is a real possibility in the future. But as you can understand it is a hugely complicated excersise and will take time, so really I can’t say when. Good enough or you want more?
