Judo judges to try out video aids

International judo officials will begin using video footage at this year’s world championships on a trial basis to help avoid controversy in refereeing, Japanese judo officials said Monday.

Under the decision, made by the International Judo Federation Executive Committee in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, the ringside judges will make video-aided judgments when asked by the referee officiating a match on the mat.

The federation will use the video as a tool to help judging for the first time at the world championships during the Sept. 8-11 meet in Cairo.

In Japan, test runs for video use have been made occasionally since Japanese heavyweight judoka Shinichi Shinohara lost in highly controversial fashion to David Douillet of France in the men’s over 100-kg final at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Instant replay goodness! Challenge that call!

Someday this will be the norm in every sport. A helluvalot of people are asking for something like this in soccer, specially for the infamous off-side, the most controversial rule in its application on this sport.

It is stupid that now that there are means, people still play sports like they are in the XIX century.

Or you can just go to submission. Don’t need a genius to figure out if someone’s tapping or not.

Strangely enough, dear BJJ stylist, fights don’t always start on the ground or on your knees. The officials may not always be in a position to see who hit the ground first.

instant replay would be particularly good in judo. i think its a great idea
