Redbreast is good stuff too. I have about 2 stores where I am at to choose from. They both have Bushmills and Jamesons…and something called Canadian Mist in a plastic jug that I don’t intend on trying unless it is to remove varnish from old furniture. Their selection on Scotch is even more pathetic. Cause when Scotch is bad, it is BAD! Not sure why there is a difference … maybe cause they don’t wear pants.
I thought that is for a man who likes the taste of iodine.
Lagavulin is my favourite Islay. Right now I have some Macallan 15Y that needs some attention.:love1:
NOOOOOO!!!
The Glenmorangie.
The 18Y is nice. I don’t quite care for all the special edition caskings though.:eusa_snoo
Thank you all for reminding me that I’ve no whisky in the house. I’ll need to remedy that soon, as I’m sure I’ll be breaking some medieval law by not having any at hogmanay.
Unlike Sophist, I can’t claim any experience with your fancier single malts, so I’ll be purchasing a bottle of plain, simple 12 year old Highland Park tomorrow.
If you are into your Islays, or fancy trying an Islay but are put off by the peatiness, give Caol Ila a try. It’s an Islay, but not a very typical one. A much lighter flavour than Ardbeg or Laphroig.
I don’t think anyones mentioned Lowland malts yet, so I am duty bound, because the distillery is about 100 feet away from me, to mention Auchentoshan. Lowlands are not normally my thing, I prefer Speyside, but I’ve heard good things about the 21 year old and the 3 Wood.
Plus they do an excellent free distillery tour!
Check the first entry of my training blog if you like scotch.
Dig it.
Oban is more my kind, but only cause it don’t hurt the wallet as much.
Yes, I too was sans whiskey when this trhead started, but have remedied that with a now half empty bottle of Redbreast. Mmm, mmm good. The perfect drink to wash down the pair of venison steaks that I had for dinner.
Ahhhh. Tonight it is Tequila Shooters thanks to my #1 student. I’ll let you know how the hangover is tomorrow. Mexican booze always drives me to the coffee pot in the morning.
So, Der, what kind of whiskeys do you stock at your bar?
Bloody right to. Like drinking liquid smoke.
I’m a drinin my Redbraast as eyes thypes and I gots no dmplaitns.
My liver gained 10 lbs this week. Treadmill is gonna suck
Liver, schimiver, I’m goint to GJJ class to morrow to let Phil and whoever els showz up beat the crap out of me.
RUM!!
No one drinking sake tonight?
I can drink rum from a large bottle many nights, the same cannot be said for sake. Although it has given me my best drunken story.
Scrwe Sake teim, its Soju temi. Oh, wait, thas supiciousrly like Der’s drunnen avata.
Up here in the North, we’re kind of careful about inviting the sidhe over the doorstep. Sorry.
Laphroaig is a whisky I very much like. I’m a little chary about recommending it unreservedly to people though, since it’s such a love-it-or-loathe-it taste. It’s smoky and musty and peaty, and if you’ve never had it before you should probably buy a dram in a pub before investing in a full bottle. The ten-year-old’s one of the most widely available whiskies in my experience though, it was relatively plentiful when I was in New Zealand recently.
Highland Park is a solid whisky. Some folk I know are big fans. I’ve got to confess I find it a little unexceptional; I’d prefer a Talisker or Laphroaig or Scapa or Ardbeg or a few other whiskies over it, but it certainly beats the Glenfiddichs and Macallans of this world.
Caol Ila can be pretty nice.
Auckentoshan I tried a little while ago, and I was slightly disappointed. It’s on the bland side. Triple-distilled, isn’t it? I’d go with Highland Park or Caol Ila over Auckentoshan.
Since I mentioned Scapa… the Scapa 14-year-old is a very drinkable malt. It has this light aftertaste of honey, but is neither cloying nor heavy - nor even all that sweet, oddly enough - and once a glass is finished you find yourself absently pouring yourself another. It’s less a nightcap whisky and more a whisky you’d put a fair dent in staying up late chatting with an old friend; it’s a moreish kind of whisky.
