I’d like somebody to tell me what can prove Gene LeBell is a good fighter. Since most of his demonstration videos have either the opponent standing in awe to coordinate with his techniques, those can’t be used to evaluate how good as a fighter he really is.
His only real fight footage I have seen is the match with Milo Savage. But that isn’t too impressive either, as given his much bigger size, it still took him four rounds to take the boxer down. And his judo skills look pretty sucked also.
So, is there any other his fight footage that can prove Gene Lebell’s a real fighter, or just a pathological story maker like what he has been called.
Gene was pretty legit when it came to Judo he was promoted to 9th Dan in Traditional Kodokan Judo by the USJJF.
The truth though is you have to look at the years he was an active competitor not exactly the day and age of everything getting taped.
Part of the reason the Milo Savage fight went on so long is he wanted to choke him out for the sake of the audience (easier for them to understand what happened) vs limb lock him.
However really just listen to how loved he is in the Martial Arts community.
Gene LeBell is tough as hell and has skills; he’s been there and done that. He isn’t making a bunch of incredible claims which cannot be substantiated.

Well he is a showman and does tend to exaggerate his claims some.
That being said, despite the fact he was born in 1932 and I was born in 1979 I think he would be able to kick my ass up and down the street so is he a great fighter? Compared to me sure the hell is.

Please, tell us more about Lebell’s pathological disorders and how you think we can intervene to save poor Gene!
He is truly pitiful, has no judo skills at all, and the entire history of his martial arts and stuntwork is all a carefully fabricated lie, much like Sandy Hook and the Boston Massacre and Obama’s presidency.
Does anyone know how long the rounds where in the Milo Savage fight?
I would assume the standard 3:00 boxing round length.
Keep that in mind when you say omg it went to the 4th round.
Those are short rounds for grappling.
Shhhhh!!! Remember, they had camcorders, cellphone recorders, computers and TVs back in the fifties. You know, every Judo match was recorded like it is today…oh wait.
I can’t even imagine how it would be getting hit with brass knuckles from a pro boxer for a few rounds. Even if there were those gloves I suspect I’d be flat on the ground within first combo punches with broken ribbs, jaw, cracked skull and massive organ damage/internal bleedings.

I suspect the bit about brass knuckles is Gene being a showman. I wouldn’t call the video evidence particularly strong.
I wouldn’t want to be blasted by a boxer for a few rounds anyways.

Thanks for comfirming my thoughts. There’s just no way one could stand up after such punisment. Even if Gene’s belt was torn up, it was probably due to age in which it saw much mat rubbing.

Gene is quite detailed in his autobiography. Sure doesn’t sound like he was speaking off the cuff or exaggerating things, if we believe Gene is being honest and not, you know, committing libel.
“First he didn’t have a judo gi but did wear a karate gi - but only the top part of it. A karate gi is smoother thatn a judo gi and doesn’t have as many handles on it for throwing and choking. On top of that, this karate gi was covered in vasoline, and I mean grease, so the handles that were there were all slicked over making Savage almost impossible to grab hold of”. “Also, instead of the standaard, 8 oz boxing gloves that we agreed on he was wearing brass knuckles covered in leather. It looked like they tried to disguise the brass knuckles as leather gloves but you could see that they were what they were.” From LeBell’s autobiography " - The Godfather of Grappling"
And who honestly thinks Gene isn’t a generally honest guy? He’s probably one of the most plain speaking martial artists I’ve ever seen. Compared to the vast majority of modern martial artists, Gene is a relic of MA integrity.

People have stood up to WORSE punishment when they weren’t world-class martial artists.
Right, Goodlun tells you he has a suspicion and it confirms your thoughts.
Look I love Gene Lebell and have the utmost respect for him.

I would think we would see some of the details in a news article of the day instead of many years later, long after Milo is dead and gone if it were 100% true.

I do think he is a generally honest guy, but he is also one hell of a fight promoter and an overall great show man that likes to hype things up.
This one of those situations where I think he may have exaggerated a bit.
Do I have any proof? Nope.
He hasn’t provided any proof that he was being nailed with brass knuckles either.
