Is BJJ a TMA?
A Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy black belt is much more than a master of technique – he is an ambassador for the art and a member of our extended “family.” A black belt must understand the Gracie lifestyle to include our philosophies, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu history, and our unique diet. As representatives of the Academy and our family, we expect black belts to personify discipline, integrity, and honor.
Sounds very TMA-ish. Is BJJ a TMA?

This is an interesting question in my opinion. I’ve read in several places that one of the criteria for the definition of a TMA is that the art is over one hundred years old (which funnily enough removes Aikido and TKD from consideration). BJJ was born in Brazil in 1916, so in five short years it will be over a hundred years old.

However that’s only one aspect of a rather loose definition of TMA. The question remains, is BJJ a TMA?

Oh boy this is oooold. It is going to devolve into semantics and your beliefs. It completely fits in the TMA definition for some people others it doesn’t. For me it fits old school TMA and not the bastardized version of TMA now. Next time comment on what you think because, a quote and a sentence are considered low content.

Thanks.

Well, in some places it has a structured grading system like with Alliance, I feel like that is in favor of a “TMA” designation. Standardized uniform = the Gi. Courtesy rituals (Hand slap before a roll begins as a sign of respect).
I think it is as much of a TMA as Taekwondo in some organizations. Alliance and the Gracie schools seem to have a very TMA vibe sometimes.

Seems like by most definitions it is. It’s got belts, uniforms, grand masters. It’s got a code of conduct, traditions, and history. Sometimes it feels like the actual distinction between TMA and Modern MA is if it is effective or not. No to the former, yes to the latter.

Sorry for derailing the thread.

I know it’s been done before. Consider this thread a snapshot in time of “local” opinion.

Personally, I think the definition of BJJ is slowly changing.

Harsh.

That’s totally two sentences.

Nevertheless, off to Trollshido we go. The rules should apply especially to those who enforce them.

I typically wait to give my opinion when asking a question.
