no offense but if you live in a gun happy country thats what you’re gonna get.
person gets mad -> emotions cancel out logic -> grabs gun to make object of hate go away -> shit hits the fan
in australia we have really really tight gun laws, don’t get me wrong, people still get shot through violence but its nowhere near as bad as it is in america.
but then again our law system is completely messed up. a friend of mine beat up four bouncers after he poured beer all over his girlfriend for some stupid reason, then when the cops came beat one up and put him in hospital overnight. the result? a $500 fine and a record.
thats one thing i really like about america (if its true) is the penalty serves the crime. that shit my friend did should have automatically got him some jail time.
back to the kid that got shot, i cant even imagine what his family must be going through, watching your son grow up only to be capped by some stupid shit that doesnt even mean anything…
Yeah but the difference is it’s a hell of a lot safer when the only weapons they can get are knives or broken beer bottles. I kinda like the idea of civil liberties entailing the right to own firearms, but the threat than any man and his dog could be packing a gun in the USA kinda freaks me out.
Anyway, OP should move. Don’t live in a dangerous area if you can avoid it.
That seems weird to me coming from Aussielanders, don’t you guys still live on a continent that has poisonous creatures 3 feet long behind every rock?
Why shouldn’t anyone who is responsible enough to drive a car also be trusted with a firearm? Frankly it’s a shit ton easier to kill people with a car than a gun…
I really don’t want to get into this here, but I hate weak arguments,
I don’t mean this as a personal attack, as I generally respect your posts, but I have to argue here.
That says nothing. What about the second, third, fourth, fifth highest firearms per capita. As a bully you should know better than to fire off single statistics.
I can give you several reasons.
a car has a useful and vital function in day to day life. A gun does not, except protection from other armed people, do you not see the circular logic here?
It reminds me of a quote
“The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy”,
“We need guns to protect against all those guns out there”
Again, do you see the circular logic?
It’s hard to commit murder in ‘the heat of the moment’ with a car when it’s parked down the road. And, after walking back to kill, chances are you’ve had a bit of time to cool off, or at least just grab the tyre iron instead. Excluding road rage cases, which are a minority and rarely (no proof on that) lead to murder.
lastly, I’d like to add, guns make it harder to survive.
A scenario:
Tonight you forgot your piece, a colt .45 you’ve nicknamed “MR BIG”. To paraphrase chris rock, you smudge someone’s pumas. This equates to an argument that escalates. Injuries
Now, He pulls a piece, You’re Fucked = Brown trouser time, then worse. IF, the knife were pulled, you’ve got options
A) Run Like Fuck (which really wasn’t there before
B) Fight (Was there but won’t work unless you do krav maga, in which case you’re still fucked)
C) Cry (The only option you had before)
And with options, you’ve got some dice rolls.
Are you honestly telling me that guns are a good idea and don’t lead to more tragedies?
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love a gun (really), but it just doesn’t make sense to me.
And furthermore, I apologise, I don’t mean to detract from what happened, my prayers to the poor fella.
As for the Aussies spouting off about guns. It’s not GUNS that make people safe. it’s the fear of sudden, lethal repercussions for stupidity.
Take Kennesaw as a PERFECT example. They require every able bodied citizen with out a record, or mental illness to keep and carry a concealed handgun. When you come of age your issued a permit, no questions asked. So why is the crime rate so low?
because you go ANYWHERE and you KNOW that someone MIGHT be armed but you don’t know because they carry CONCEALED.
Example. Guy is down on his luck, walks into a convenience store, thinks of robbing the place. Now usually if he’s armed he’s fairly certain he’s the only armed person. Yet in Kennesaw he’s fairly certain someone else in the convenience store is armed. Now is he going to go through with the robbery and HOPE that none of the nice LAW ABIDING citizens are following the LAW and carrying CONCEALED? Or is he going to walk away?
The fear of getting SHOT stops crime. Even if nobody is armed there is a public mandate that everyone be armed.
An armed society, is a polite society. End of discussion.
It would make us all safer if bad guys didn’t have to worry about legally possesed firearms in the hands of intended victims… Just keep thinking about how stupid that sounds.
That’s why this derail is in YMAS. Bobby wanted to vent and instead gets a “if you live in a gun happy country thats what you’re gonna get.” bullshit statement.
Okay, I see both sides here and honestly I personally like the idea that I don’t have to worry that some tough talking mofo will pull a piece on me here in my lovely country. On the other hand I get the idea that people have a need to protect themselves from what ever evil there is and they are looking for every option possible.
But here is the thing that strikes me as a bit strange.
There are states that still have the death penalty so people should be fucking scared to kill other people and think about it twice, right? Yet they still do it. They don’t think “chances are I get caught and I will end dead” (aka. chances are somebody else is carrying)
As somebody mentioned, I can kill somebody with my car or try with what ever tool is around but chances are that I won’t. If I snap I will beat them up like there is not tomorrow but they still have a chance.
