Hi,
Just saw this thread. The fighting side of Tai Chi has not been totally lost to posterity, thankfully, although many Tai Chi practitioners and even masters no longer know it. I’ve been studying for about a year with Master David Bond Chan in New York City. His emphasis is on application, and he even says that if you aren’t learning to fight, you are missing many of the health benefits of Tai Chi.
Check out this video of David Chan’s relaxed tai chi punching to see what I mean:

Good luck!

Hi all,
My teacher, David Bond Chan, has helped me demystify much of the differences between the 3 major internal martial arts, and to understand each one better. His focus is not on the esoteric explanations of the differences (e.g. position of the bai hui point or state of mind) but on the practical differences in the way each produces power and approaches combat.
One of the things I’ve learned recently, for example, is that Hsing I’s power is greater but this is because it is fully applied in each movement. This also means, however, that the movement must be completed before another can begin. Tai Chi’s prefers to reserve choice and options for as long as possible, making it more changeable. Please note, these are my words, not my teacher’s.
For examples of my teacher, check out this vid of him defending against a roundhouse kick using Hsing I’s Heng Chuan:

and another of him using Tai Chi’s relaxed Changeable punching:

David Bond Chan teaches in New York City if any or all are interested. You can visit http://davidbondchan.com or contact me for more info.
Thanks,
Bill
Can he fight is right! He looks like he can, although fighting is also a function of size, condition, fighting mind, etc. Just wanted to throw my contribution into this thread, in case someone here is interested in seeing how Hsing I fights (it seems so far to be a critique of someone I don’t know).

Hi all,
Wanted to share a Hsing I Clip of my teacher, Master David Bond Chan of New York City. In this clip he uses Xing Yi’s Heng Chuan or crossing fist to defend against a roundhouse kick, if you can call knocking someone on their ass a defense

Enjoy, and check out more vids on http://davidbondchan.com
Thanks!

My experience with him has been a revelation. The Hsing I training is real, including full contact two man sets with gear, drilled at full power.
