Let me “come up off the floor” and crater this pip squeak. Ochiai is a meglamania with a small man’s complex. He claimed (back in the 70’s&80’s) to have “killed a man in defending his Master’s honor”. Check with the students at the time the digital age makes it easy. If you look closely at his “battle scare” on the lower ab that he claims was made by his opponents sword it is the type of scar that could be made by someone attempting hira-kiri; it may just be that this guy tried to do himself in at one time, survived and developed a god complex. His story about learning Washin Ryu in a temple and the "it’s too sacred thing is a large pile of nitrogenous waste recently deposited by a passing bovine. Years ago a student wanted to visit said temple on his trip to Japan and Ochiai told him that it burned to the ground. Fine, give the address or approximate location and we will research the records. He can’t because it is part of his fabricated schtik. The bed of nails stunt is a farse as is his arrow trick. The only time he ever fought full contack he got his clock cleaned by a brown belt in New England. Enough of this phoney baloney!
This is the investigation forum. If you want to start an investigation you need to link a specific quote and disclose your relation to the accused. Just because you say a guy makes false claim doesn’t make this an investigation. Get your information together with documentation and re state your point. Does this guy have a web site where he makes outrageous claims? If you have had a personal falling out with the guy it’s good to get that out in the open too.

Guess the investigation was just merged with an existing thread/bitchfest. I’m not reading the previous 32 pages to catch up.
Yep, he wasn’t adding anything that hasn’t been addressed. I also wouldn’t be surprised if he read this thread and then decided to start a new one.
Okay, this about Ochiai’s story don’t shoot the messenger or take the focus off his story because my friend the key question is: The real story behind Hidy Ochiai’s Washin Ryu ??? Let me respect your critism without agreeing with you. The investigation questions are: Where is the Temple? Did he kill a man defending his Master’s honor? (who what where when?) Was he in "Enter the Dragon? Did he meet Bruce Lee? (where and when?) Linda Lee is still alive to check with. More questions for investigation will be forthcoming. Thank you.QUOTE=jspeedy;2697738]This is the investigation forum. If you want to start an investigation you need to link a specific quote and disclose your relation to the accused. Let’s try this again. Do not start a thread in the incorrect area. Find an existing thread or start it in the correct sub-forum.
I’ll try to help with this even though this is a dated thread. There are several key questions that Hidy Ochiai cannot answer;
1. Where is this mysterious Temple that is “too sacred” to talk about?
2.Did he actually kill a man defending his Master’s honor and as a result get the hara kiri like scar?(explain who, what ,where, when and why?)
3. Did he appear in Enter the Dragon? If so explain in detail and if not why hasn’t he refuted this?
4. Did he know Bruce Lee and teach him nun chuks?
He cannot answer these questions because we can check with his students from decades ago. Danny Inosanto and Linda Lee are still alive to confirm or deny. Any Temple records can be easily traced.
Now, here is a theory on Hidy Ochiai and Washin Ryu.
Ochiai came to America in the early 1960’s at a time when there was still a great deal of anti-Japanese sentiment. Emotions from the war were still high and he was picked on as a result. His deminutive stature of a little over five-foot and 115 pounds soaking wet are almost dwarf-like for comparison. As a result, he suffered from “small man complex” and became a megalomaniac. (look up the term and you will get it.)
In the early 60’s there was a film called “Our Man Flint” starring James Colburn. It stars a megalomanicial secret agent named"Derick Flint" (Notice that Ochiai named his first born Derick.) The film depicted a brief scene of a karate demonstration featuring Flint as a black belt karate expert. Ochiai seems to have been inbued with the entire concept and if he survived a suicide attempt as I suspect, he may suffer from a messiah complex as well. This explains his grandiose behavior and the cult- like tenets of his Washin Ryu karate-do. He desperately needs self seeking attention and wants to be worshiped.
I’ll leave it to others to investigate, reflect and reach their own conclusions based on the facts.
I know that Bruce Lee believed in an alive fighting system and thought learning to fight in preset moves (kata) was tanamount to learning to swim on dry land. Remember that Ochiai’s one and only sanctioned full contact fight resulted in his getting thrashed in a second round TKO by a brown belt in New England (it is on the net). He was so swollen and black-eyed that he stayed home for two weeks.
I am not drinking the Cool Aid my friends!
Thanks for listening and good luck to all.
[QUOTE=UnknownLineage;692880]Does anyone know the real history of Hidy Ochiai and his “karate” style, Washin-ryu? I have been there for a number of years and the stories just don’t make sense to me anymore.
Can anybody clarify? Does he really have a traditional karate background? Or maybe Judo? I heard that he started in Judo and then made up some kata for karate competition and then learned shotokan from Mikami before launching a more traditional focus. However, this is all closely guarded from his students and noone seems to know more than the “party line.”
I am getting tired of being seen with skeptical eyes every time I tell the version I learned to authentic karateka…

You’ll leave it for others to investigate, but you were starting an investigation?
Kool-aid is spelled with a “K.”
Wow, trollshido.
Hahahahaha, Thread Title FTW!
Reply to: The real history of Hidy Ochiai/Washin Ryu
Here are the key questions that Hidy Ochiai cannot answer (at least not truefully):
1. Where is the mysterious Temple ? Give us an approximate location and we can do a records search.
2. Did he "kill a man defending his Master’s honor as he told his “deciples” and receive the hara-kiri type scar ? (who what where and when?) What honor? ( check with Kushner, Antonides and others of the early years)
3. Did he ever attempt to commit suiside?
4.Was he involved in any way in the movie “Enter the Dragon”? If so, state specifics and if not why didn’t he refute an urban legend? ( Danny Inosanto and Linda Lee can confirm or deny).
Psychological theory:
Ochiai can to America in the early 1960’s a time where there was a still a great deal of anti-Japanese sentiment. Given his diminutive stature (barely 5ft. and 115 lbs. soaking wet) he was picked on and discriminated against. As a result he suffers from “small man complex” and this developed into megalomania. He may have attempted to do himself in but survived and further developed a Massiah complex. This explains his grandiose behavior and self-seeking for attention. Bottom-line this man wants to be worshiped. He was inbued by depictions of a karate master in the 60’s film “Our Man Flint” and even named his first-born “Derick” after the hero Derick Flint.
He was humilated and totally thrashed in his one and only PKA sanctioned fight by an ignomenious brown belt in New England.
Reach your own conclusions my friends but I am not drinking the Cool-Aid.

Please stop. My bandwidth is hurting.
Hidy Ochiai’s credibility ?
I wanted to post several questions that “Master” Ochiai should be able to answer:
-
Where is the mysterious temple that he said was too sacred to talk about ? We can research records if he can provide the approximate location.
-
What was his specific involvement, if any, in the movie "Enter the Dragon? If he was not involved why didn’t he refute this “urban legend”?
3.Did he ever kill a man defending his Master’s honor and receive a sword wound in his lower abs. as he told his students back in the day?
The above questions regarding Hidy Ochiai are fair and straight forward and I value this forum so let the battle begin.
Hidy Ochiai seems to be a meglomanic with a messiah complex given his grandious behavior and need to worshiped. Let peer behind the his mask and have a little fun here.
Ochiai came to America in the early 1960’s at a time when there was a great deal of anti-Japanese sentiment. This unfortunate social situation gave him a “small man complex” (he is about 5 ft and weighs 115 lbs). His persecusion
This is all I see here.
I think I have a picture that will provide some clarification here, OP.
Let’s be kinder here. Ochiai is an old man now and over the hill. He is probably going through an agonizing reassessment of his life and lies. It would explain why this “tough guy” has not come out of his shell and to address the issues directly.
We all have made mistakes in life because we are all human. I think the real story of Hidy Ochiai and Washin-ryu comes down to the question: Has he done more good than harm?
I for one am inclined to cut the guy some slack because I see more good in him.
Strength & Honor,
A fellow warrior.
I have extensively reviewed this as well another thread about Hidy Ochiai and his lack of credibility. The summary of his psychological profile has merit. He is diminutive in physical stature, barely 5 feet and 115 pounds, he did come to this country in the 1960’s at a time when there was still a great deal of anti-Japanese sentiment and suffered from harassment and discrimination. As a result he acquired a “Napolionic” or “small -man” complex. He seemed to be imbued with an early film depiction of a megalomaniac karate “Expert” Derick Flint in the early 60’s movie “Our Man Flint” and even named his first-born Derick.
The key questions that he can never answer truthfully:
- Where was the location of the sacred temple where he was taught Washin-ryu? When pressed on this previously he said that it burned down. Fine, records can still be checked.
- Did he kill a man defending his Master’s honor? If so who, when and where did this occur?
- Was he in any way involved with “Enter the Dragon”. If so explain, if not explain why he didn’t refute this falsehood?
Stay tuned!!!
