I Have Brought Shame on the Moo Duk Kwan

Hi guys,

I have a question i have been interested in martial arts for sometime. i was wondering what is your opinion on moo duk kwan style martial arts

When I took TKD they said it was moo duk kwan style, I can’t really say for sure if it is the same as just moo duk kwan. They did seem to concentrate more on power kicks than the other TKD places here, and had some degree of grappling (hapkido judo mix). What are you looking for in a style??

Why don’t you tell us your opinion before your start wasting space in my forum?

Sorry to ask such a basic question, but I did some research and I’m still not clear.

Is it THE Moo Duk Kwan, as in a place, or Moo Duk Kwan as a martial arts style? I’ve always seen it tacked on to TKD or TSD. I know Kwan is translated as School, but some Chinese styles have something like that but refer to a style, not the actual place. You’d think this would be very clear, but it isn’t.

^mook duk kwan the martial arts style. im interested in knowing if it has any grappling techniques which are taught.

There might be better grappling out there, would be my guess at least.

Mine had grappling due to one of the instructors having a background in both judo and hapkido. Not sure if that’s the standard. If you are wanting more in depth grappling it would probably be better to go with a grappling art such as BJJ or judo rather than as an add-on to a striking art.

The answer is… No, not really. Mu Duk Kwan was what the originator of TangSooDo initially called his organization. You’ll find that most kwans calling themselves Mu Duk Kwan in the present day are TaeKwonDo, as the two are very similar anyway… which means little to no grappling. If you want grappling in Korea, or Korean grappling, maybe look for Yudo. Last time I was in Seoul, which has been several years ago, that was about the only form of “grappling” that I encountered.

Where are you?

Then why didn’t you ask that the first time, dipshit?

Are we all supposed to just jump up and tell you everything we know about the Moo Duk Kwan?

How old are you?

Isn’t Yudo, Judo?
Isn’t Yudo, Judo?
Yes, it is.

The Mudeokgwan in all its variations is Korean Karate at best. A waste of time if you want to learn grappling.

if all you can do is hurl insults then you wasting my time and yours.

Hwang Gi is the originator of a school of Dangsudo. He is not the originator of Dangsudo.

thanks for the clarification

Actually, I probably have more coherent information about the Mudeokgwan than anyone else on this board, and probably more than anyone else on any English language martial arts forum with the possible exception of Warrior-Scholar.

You are the one violating forum rules with low content posts and asking questions with little clarification. You did not post an introduction in Newbietown and jumped right into a specialized forum. You did not read the README posts. Do so. It will help you.

thank you

You’ve got me bound by this, as I cannot really dispute that… You’re probably the only person in this thread that would know why, though.

Edit:

Plenty of Judo and BJJ in California to supplement your TKD. There’s also plenty of HapKiDo, as well. If you prefer more standing, then I would look for Judo or HKD.
california
ORLY? Where in CA?

*Edit, I’m guessing San Diego.
