How to check/verify military records

In various investigations, it becomes necessary to verify military service (or more specifically, what someone’s role was in the military).

I know about the Standard Form SF-180 –

What are other steps to take? Key questions to ask? And forms to fill out?

Try a local military museum if you have one. I know a local curator, and I am assuming they are all ex officers so they should have reasonable access to records. Funny, since many users here say they are military, I thought you would of gotten more replies.

I think I know how you feel too. We have a local ex military personnel hospital with quite a few vietnam vets who can recount famous battles but don’t appear on any official lists. Amazing how they keep getting left off, year after year.

You already have your answer, why would you need anything else?

Will give you a list of things to specifically ask for under the freedom of information act.

Samuel, Its funny that you link to this page which clearly list POW Network as experts and the go to guys for phonie veterans yet when Marc Denny refered to them as a pack of yapping dogs and he basicaly calls them liars it is overlooked.

As far as me, The only claim I have made is that I’m a Military Veteran, If you know any American in Bangkok I would be happy to meet them at Lumpini and confirm this status. I figure this will be cleared up by the end of January. Bryan Lee aka AR549

When I was informed about the POWnetworks site posting something I had
written on Eskrima Digest about MG I went and read what they had to
say. Naturally, I was quite concerned. Over time that I knew him, the
timeline of MG’s stories had become more incredible, yet I found the
website to be quite disreputable and to be lacking in integrity.

I am unfamiliar with the current status of the site, but at the time it
consisted nearly entirely of anonymous accusations and hearsay
(“Someone told me he said”). They specifically asked for accusations. They
specifically said that anonymous was OK. They specifically said that
hearsay was OK. (“Tell us what you have heard someone say and you don’t
need to give his name or yours” :-o  :x ).

This is something I profoundly disrespect. If you are going to bring a
man down, be man enough to put your name to it.

Question: What do you do when a friend/teacher is accused anonymously?

Question: What do you do when a friend/teacher is in trouble?

Question: What do you do when a friend/teacher is down?

Part of my idea you don’t abandon friendship when an anonymous pack of
dogs is yapping. You look for people who are man enough to put their
names to what they say before dignifying it with credibility.

So, I took the time to answer them. If you read what I actually say
(and apparently some of the posters on this thread actually did-- thank
you) I spoke to what I personally knew and nothing else. I offered it
simply as something for them to add to their search for truth.

In the subsequent back and forth correspondence between the people
running the website and me I feel they acted with less than full integrity

After cleaning up my barf, I moved on and lacking respect for them,
have since then have had nothing further to do with them.

Check out the POW and veterans networks.
One of the most effective organizations dedicated toward unmasking phony POws and military heroes is the nonprofit POW Network. You can contact the POW Network by going to their website at www.pownetwork.org or calling (660) 928-3304.

The POW Network contains a large archive of phony POWs, some of whom have attempted to dupe reporters, veterans groups or individuals in more than one location.

The POW Network has assembled a number of official rosters which will be useful in determining the veracity of the veteran's claim, including:<ul>
  • The PMSEA Roster of all Vietnam-era POWs
  • Roster of all Medal of Honor recipients and citations
  • Roster of all living Medal of Honor recipients
  • Legion of Valor website (Membership limited to recipients of the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, and Air Force Cross)
  • CyberSEALS: Rosters of unmasked phony SEALS.In addition, the POW Network has hyperlinks to a number of military alumni organizations that monitor false claimants, including the Army Ranger Association, Naval Special Warfare Command (SEALs), USS Pueblo incident and more.
  • We don’t have anyone in Thailand, but if you pm me your birthdate, the dates of your service, and the dates you were in I’ll request your record through the FOIA. It will take about ten weeks.

As far as Denny goes, I disagree with him on this issue.

Give it some time and I will verify my status. Im working on it now. Thanks

    :new_scram Does not compute?

Same old bullshit answer… He’s verifying his OWN records ?
    I call you a fucking

    BULLSHITTER

Right on Dave…same old story…Im working on it…

I like it how he said that if we had an American in Thailand he would meet them at the stadium…I will bet he isnt meeting FD today.

Then why would it take you until the end of January to verify that claim ?

    You are a bullshitter.

Why have you offered to meet someone whilst we have someone on this board in your country TODAY who offered to meet you, and you refused to oblige.

    You are a bullshitter.

I thought fatherdog WAS willing to meet him in Thailand.

Absolutely correct, not only that but he was with someone who would be able to validate any military ID which Bryan Lee chose to present… Lee then quickly back-peddled by later refusing to meet him.

… Which is why Lee’s suggestion in this thread, that if we had an “american” in Thailand he meet that person is another fucking load of cock-swallowing BULLSHIT

Why the arbitrary 7 day time limit? Just for added flavor?

    See the thread in Trollshido.

Because I will not be bothered with any of this bullshit after the 7 days if he does not sign A contract. I think the bullshido of bullshido is clearly defined by my being challanged to A fight and then when I offer to make A real and contracted Bare Knuckle fight in A country where it can really go down the thread is dumped into the trash bin so the weeklings who actually believe bullshido has any legitimate right to make the claims it makes of no BS can cover its own ass and run from the reality that it pretends to live in.
