I’m planning to open a martial arts school soon, teaching my own system. The system uses a lot of my old TKD training.
I’d like it to take about 6-8 months on average for each of the 5 belts after white, so that a black belt takes about 3 years from a dedicated student.
It would be helpful to see some sample requirement systems so that I know how much stuff I can dump on a student and expect him to become proficient in it.
Side question: how much time would you say you spend mastering a form for a belt test, and how many self defense techniques are you accustomed to being able to do in that time?
I’m not really interested in defending myself on this forum. I’m more interested in receiving opinions on what I asked, specifically, without answers that invalidate the questions. I might talk about myself more in the future, but not right now.
Anyone is free to ask questions or make any point they want, but I’m most likely not responding to them unless I see a benefit for myself.
Knowing why you’re moving away from TKD and what you plan on teaching instead may help in figuring what you should have in your syllabus and what styles are comperable, but if you just want to get defensive as soon as any questions pop up, good luck with that.
What else is this system besides your TKD training? How much time has been spent in TKD and in other arts? These questions are not accusatory; they’re kind of necessary to answering your questions.
Any particular thoughts on why it should be 3 years to black belt?

I’ve trained kali and silat, muay thai, jujitsu, combined trapping / jkd, and lesser time in karate and krav maga. I’ve spent about 12 years as an adult in martial arts (having returned to it), and 5 years as a child.
I think 3-4 years is a reasonable amount of time to convey a complete idea (assuming they train daily on their own and that they come to class at least 4-6 hours a week), and an amount of time that a lot of people expect that you should be able to learn to do something complicated in (like high school or college).
People I’ve taught in the past have gotten a really high degree of competency in MMA / free sparring, in less than 2 years, but they didn’t get all of the skills that I think are important to be well rounded in self defense, which is at least as difficult to learn on its own. I plan on incorporating weapons, trapping and more grappling into the system, especially at the higher ranks, to help round out their understanding.
Tkd is well documented in multiple publications. I would buy those books to start. Next I would purchase similar books for karate systems. To finish off your research, you should write down all you remember about your progress in TKD. Then make notes and compare to published information. Should give you a framework to work with. Next, contact schools you will not be business competitors with. See if you could interview them. Be prepared to pay for time and make the offer pay. At the least a gift is appropriate.
Did someone actually come to Bullshido asking for advice on how to start a McDojo?
From all appearances, yes. Looks like he is trying to develop a business model.

What do you consider a high degree of competency? Do you have any video of your students sparring? Can you post thier fight records.
