High school self-defense club disbanded after martial-arts sparring match

A self-defense club at Davie High School has been disbanded after two students in the club had a martial-arts sparring match after school last week, according to a news release from Davie County Schools.

The club did not allow any sparring, said Bill Campbell, a spokesman for the school system. The club started at the beginning of the school year after students and a faculty member made a request to the principal, Cary Powers. Two students sparred and other students in the club filmed it. The sparring match was eventually posted to the Internet, Campbell said.

School officials are now investigating the incident and looking at whether the faculty advisor to the club knew about the sparring match or had anything to do with organizing it, Campbell said.

Campbell declined to release the names of the students or the faculty advisor. The club was disbanded this week, Campbell said.

I wonder who ratted them out. Maybe a TKD group that complained they were too aggressive. They were just keeping it real!

No sparring allowed for self defense! Maybe disbanding is a good thing.

They had to disband because one of the guys was blinded (by eye gouges of course), castrated, riddled with AIDs needles, and half-eaten by land sharks.

I can understand why they wouldn’t want kids sparring at school. Especially with the ‘zero tolerance’ for violence most schools adhere to these days.

They can have their club, but it doesn’t have to be on school grounds.

The key is not to do any of that crap in the school. Public schooling basically exists to further bureaucracy and politics at the expense of learning anything meaningful. It is a great murderer of time.

oh man I heard about this

I was totally watching this in chem

Ryan totally kicked the crap out of that new kid, Jake Tyler

If that’s it…not bad. I hope the kids are on their HS wrestling team and find a place on their own to keep training MMA. HS wrestling may be the only appropriate martial arts activity for HS for various reasons mostly political.

Strangely enough, a friend of mine told me about how when he was in high school, if people got into a fight they’d break it up, then make them go to the gym, put on boxing gloves and finish it out.

Of course, this was back in the early 80s…

God…how do high schools in Japan have Judo, kendo, & karate clubs?

How do the Koreans have gumdo, yudo, & taegwondo?

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THOSE CRAZY ASIANS?!?

DON’T THEY KNOW SPARRING KILLS HIGH SCHOOLERS!!!

Forget sparring, when I was in elementary school, during the fall and winter months (deer and turkey season, to you city folks) a search of the vehicles in the school parking lot would probably have turned up enough rifles, shotguns, and ammunition to supply a successful invasion of a small Central American country.
If someone had attempted to shoot up the school back then their corpse would probably have been riddled with enough bullets to ballast a battleship.

Yeah, we actually went from “Just leave it in your pickup” to “zero tolerance within 500’ of the school” in a month.

Did you know that in Asia, there is no bullying in schools?

Because they don’t have guns.

At least the folks at your elementary had the fortitude to stick it out, most people would’ve dropped out by the time they were old enough to drive.

We are a country that goes through one extreme to another. In the older days, you took care of business short of killing one another, you were basically left alone. In today’s zero tolerance policy around schools, you can’t do anything anymore that may be construed as violent behavior. Those guys should have checked to make sure it was ok before they did anything, unless they were told its ok. Now, they will just have to do their sparring at home or just away from the school where no one from school can complain. Pretty sad when you can’t do live action to help in the self defence class. I guess the order of the day is to just watch videos and simulations to understand how self-defence works.
Kind of dumb if you ask me, with no alive training its isn’t worth the time…

they probably don’t have pick-ups with gunracks, either.

It’s getting worse now, schools have actually started punishing kids for things done outside of school that the administration becomes aware of. Two students at my old high school went down the the carwash to fight (as was the tradition when I was in HS as well) after school. The administration found out about it and suspended them both. So, after hours, off school grounds, still got suspended. W T F.

We live in a country of pussies.
