Herb - a help or hindrance

Although Eddie Bravo swears by it … I’m not sure herb helps your game. I went to class with a buzz for the first time and it wasn’t so great. The jits killed my buzz and my buzz killed my jits - WRT cardio anyway. Other than that no big deal. What’s Bravo talking about anyway? In his book he says it helps his game but I care to differ. Anyone else care to comment? I was going to post this in DHS but decided otherwise … :slight_smile:

It’s part of the myth that weed makes you more creative. All it does is make you lazy and being lazy is not going to help your game.

Exactly. Lazy would be a perfect description of my roll tonight. All I wanted to do was pull guard … I normally I’m the opposite. Maybe if you prefer fighting from the guard weed helps.

Slow, hungery and stupid. Can’t see how that helps with anything. The Olympic rules committee seems to think the same way.

It helps in some ways and hurts in others. Not really going to explain this statement because I’m too lazy from being high.

I doubt most narcotics would help much in terms of physical exertion, except for maybe speed or something.

I also think weed turns you into a pacifist. My basic game of crush, smother, choke, seems to suffer from it.

How can feeling so lazy that you don’t want to get up and not understanding the most basic premise be good for your grappling?

I don’t buy into this. Concentration span when stoned goes out the window and you’re more likely to find a sweat pattern on the mat more interesting than your sparring partner.

It really depends, as everyone is different and is effected differently from smoking ganja.

Every now and again I smoke a j when I get off of work, right before class- and it doesn’t hinder me from being fully aggressive and paying attention to everything that’s going on around me. As a matter of fact, I am one of the more aggressive guys in class. Though- I don’t think it provides any positive benefit either. That’s not why I do it though- just because it’s relaxing after a long day.

I think a big factor is how often you blaze up in the first place. People who smoke only once and awhile are going to get really really stoned and that would overwhelm those who aren’t used to it. People who smoke often though, if you have a bit of a tolerance - meh, it don’t do shit to yer game. Sometimes I do smoke before class, sometimes I don’t- and it never makes the slightest difference either way.

I would guess if he was reffering to any positive benefit from it, it would be from helping you to stay calm. Mentally, and physically. I notice sometimes when I spar stoned, that while the other guys are bouncing on their feet running their adrenaline up I am able to maintain my composure and heart rate and I outgas them quickly. Also, it keeps you cool-headed in the face of what would normally make you nervous. Of course though- I DEFINETELY DO NOT think you should smoke marijuana as a means of faciliting this, as a supplement or something. But if you do already, no big deal.

I’ve never tried it because weed is a horrible drug that just puts me to sleep. I’d love to try and train on a mild dose of psychedelics though. Psychedelics actually alter the way your brain processes information so that neurons make connections faster. They also make your brain waves more like a childs brain and we all know that children learn shit way quicker then adults, I’d never have learned to dance without psychedelics making my hyper aware of my body.

If nothing else, get a psychadelic buzz going and spar with some friends. Me and my buddies at the boxing gym used to do it all the time.

I took magic mushrooms before I fought in my second muay thai smoker, and I won all three fights that day in the first round. (which was way better than my first.) More importantly though, it was a whoooole lotta fun and I felt more limber, free and natural in there than I ever had before. Nowadays sometimes if I get worked up before fighting, I say to myself- ‘Remember what it’s like to fight tripping. Fight like that.’

Weed has a weird effect on me personally, as it doesnt make me sleepy in the least. I’ll blaze it up, and then all the sudden I get motivated and I wanna work out, or play guitar, or do the dishes… anything really, just move around. Even if I’m dead tired before I smoke, it wakes me right up and gets me in that ‘kid’ mode where you just wanna keep moving, keep learning and have fun.

I hear that different strains have different effects, perhaps my friends that kept wanting me to smoke with them just prefer the make you lazy kind.

My girlfriend tells me that her buddy used to take a mild dose of mushrooms before playing soccer and said it made him feel much more in tune and preform better in the game. So, It’s on the list of things to do.

Actually, that’s a good point. There is more than one chemical released when you burn cannabis and they can produce different effects. THC is found in greater levels in the higher-potency, seedless strains of sativa (the purples, the kush, the coffee-shop quality stuff)- and produces an elevated, cerebral, psychadelic high.

CBD- found in the regular, dark green herb (indica) with seeds, causes that low, sinking ‘stuck’ sort of stoned where you just wanna watch tv and take a nap.

I brought an iced coffee with me to the gym instead of a bottle of water one time, and my hart was pumping like a chihuahua.

I took about 800mgs of caffine in No-Doz style pills before doing kickboxing once. I found that my cardio went to shit but fuck was I fast for the few minutes I had some wind in me.

Basically i’d work the bag or pads like a machine gun for about 2 minutes, need a 5 minute break,and then do it again.

I smoked some hash (about 20 years ago) and went to my kyokushinkai karate class. I didn’t really enjoy the experience and my heart rate went through the roof.

for me it’s always been a matter of fighting the urge to lay around. it helps if you have something to do.

You gotta hit that shit til you start to trip. Hotbox if you need to, THEN go do something. If you don’t burn at least some mids and have a nice psychedelic reference point, you’re gonna get stoned and stupid. Do it right and you’ll still SOUND like an idiot, but you’ll think on a psychedelic level.

All in the rotation for me. If you can still track the rotation of the damn thing, you’re not high enough. If you’re fucking up the rotation and confused as to why, you’re just smacked. You gotta keep hitting that shit deep until you understand the rotation of the blunt as it relates to the rotation of the universe. When that shit makes sense, you know you’re tripping. I like to burn that shit out back with the team, go inside and roll mad creative.
