This summer after thoroughly reading the beer thread I truly expanded my taste and drank all kinds of badass beers (Smuttynose IPA, kicks ass!)
The problem is I likes my drinks on the weekends. After a long week of x ray school, and slave labor at the hospital I like to relax with a drink or two. Any suggestions on somewhat healthier drinks? I’m trying to limit carbs and sugar where I can. Calories aren’t a huge problem I burn it off pretty easily, i’m actually trying to gain weight. Some people say you can’t get bigger and get cut, others seem to think you can from what i’ve read.
Is this a lost cause (healthy drinking)? Michelob amber ultra is drinkable w/ 3.7 carbs, no fat and 114 calories per beer its ok but after 4-6 beers the calories do add up. Has anyone heard of any magical good beers that are equivalent to the michelob ultra variety? I’ve heard clear liquor is the least bad for you, and that white wine is ok too (still I hate wine, i’m really a beer guy). Thoughts, opinions, and comments would be appreciated (for the most part).

Good point! I’ve been working on the rest of an old bottle of gin since I quite with the beer. I’ll have to check the nutrition facts on vodka if thats what they want to call it. For the record (that no one cares about) I’ve lived plenty for a guy my age, really I’m lucky to be alive with all the stupid shit i’ve seen and been through. I’m all about living that’s what i’m trying to do, I just want to look good while I do the rest of it. So i’ll take your advice and drink one half gallon of vodka per day. That is what you said right?
I don’t touch the evil stuff though. I don’t care how fucking healthy that shit is for you. It’s right up there with Jaigermeister in the “Top 10 drinks that will make you wake up next to dead fat chicks”.
But if you can limit your intake to about 1-4 shots (max) you should be fine.

At the end of the day - if you want to get “ripped” you’ll pretty much be wanting to pass on the booze. And for beers - low cal one I know, that’s good is New Belgium’s Skinny Dip - 114 cals as well, but it does actually taste like beer vs. a chemical beverage.
That said - guinness is only 125 cals, Sol Cerveza Especial is 127 cals. Carbs on Skinny are 7g, guinness and Sol about 10g.
There is no such thing as ‘healthy drinking’ because no matter what the carb or calorie content, alcohol will kill your recovery faster than anything. Alcohol is the big testosterone suppresent known to man. If you drink on friday, you can’t train until monday (well, you can, but you’re not going to get ripped from it).
Somebody should share this information with the gaggles of fucking, drunken testosterone soaked jackasses I see walk by the bar I work every Saturday.

I recommend Ketel One for a brand.
It’s just a clean alcohol, if there is such a thing. And it mixes well if you find you don’t enjoy the way it tastes. Personally, I drank it on the rocks or straight up until I discovered whiskey. Since then I enjoy a bit more flavor to my booze.
But if you’re looking to unwind without consuming so many calories, hard liquor will do the job. Have a vodka with soda and a lime.
KFC is correct, to an extent, the enzymes that break down alcohol also break down tesosterone, for most people this is not an issue, but, if you drink enough that your ‘tolerance’ increases, it’s because of an increase in the enzyme levels in your liver, this in turn leads to a reduction in your level of testosterone, hence ‘brewers droop’. But you do need to drink quite a lot to be significant. Alcohol fueled guys aren’t running on testoserone anyway.
If you want to get cut, then don’t drink, actually probably more important than the drinking is the activities that you are doing to get cut, activities that eat glycogen wont be burning fat for example.
Red wine. Though you have to be fucking cool to pull off ordering a chateau-neuf-du-pape in a bar, if you can do it - and appreciate the quality of what you’re drinking - you are truly on your way to becoming a living legend.

I recommend pinot noir. The average watering hole will usually have a pinot noir around and it’s a nice lighter red. Merlot is too syrupy for and me. A cabernet sauvignon might be okay too.
But yeah, unless you’re ordering wine and drinking it in a very, very offhand fashion you’re going to look like a tool.

Ask the bar what they have for a red.

I’d recommend that if you’re not an experienced wine drinker, don’t go picking varietals like you have any idea what you’re doing. If they have a decent sized wine list and you don’t know what to get, ask the bartender what they like and get that. If their selection is white, red and pink… just drink liquor.

No, motherfucker, what you read at one time was that there was a correlation between alcohol and testosterone levels in humans. Specifically that chronic alcoholism causes an overall decrease in testosterone levels in males. Alky does affect testosterone production, but I assure you, motherfucker, that the enzymes that break down alcohol do not work on anything else besides alcohol. They don’t catalyze testosterone breakdown in their spare time, they fuck around like everybody else.
Good motherfucking paper though. It illuminated some things for me. I might read that whole book. It would appear that ethanol has some kind of allosteric effect on the enzymes responsible for testosterone synthesis pathways. Fucking awesome, dude!
