OMAHA, Neb. – A pit bull is being held at the Nebraska Humane Society after a 10-year-old girl jumped on the dog, which was attacking her 4-pound dog, Omaha television station KETV reported.

Teghan Hert, 10, was rushed to an emergency room but only suffered a couple of minor scratches. She said she was just taking her 2-year-old Chihuahua for a walk when a pit bull came charging at them. She said her instincts took over from there.

“She’s my best friend,” Hert said of her dog. “I don’t know what I would do without her.”

Hert said that during a late afternoon walk, the pit bull broke free from its leash as it walked along the same street with its owner. The big dog jumped on the Chihuahua, then Hert jumped on the pit bull.

“I was just trying to pull him back with all my might, but it was impossible. He was so strong,” the girl said.

Hert’s mother and a neighbor helped pull them apart.

“I was just screaming, hoping that someone would come out, and luckily, that guy did come out. It was so scary,” Hert said.

“Even myself, as an adult, would not reach into the middle of that,” said Teghan’s father, Ralph Hert. “I don’t think she thought anything. I think she wanted to save her puppy’s life.”

Ralph Hert considers his daughter pretty brave. He’s just glad she wasn’t seriously injured.

“The Chihuahua weighs 4 pounds and it would have been over pretty quick. So without what Teghan did, the Chihuahua wouldn’t be here,” Ralph Hert said.

The Chihuahua suffered superficial wounds.

The owners of the pit bull told the station that the dog is a household pet and was most likely trying to play with the Chihuahua, not hurt it.

The owners have been ticketed for lack of restraint, having no license and no vaccinations.

The pit bull is under quarantine at the Humane Society for 10 days to see if it has rabies. The dog can then be returned to the owners[/i]

Owners, not dogs, are the problem

For those of you who don’t know (and likly don’t care, but), Pit Bulls have been outlawed in the province of Ontario. As far as the one’s that were around before the ban was put in place, all these dogs must be spayed or neutered, they require a special licence, they must be muzzled at all times in public and there are very stiff fines for any violations.
Too many idiots own these sorts of dogs. Courage on a leash. It is a shame the animals have to suffer such a negative image. Most pit bulls I have known that were raised by good owners were great dogs.

Little girl by RNC?

I think that girl needs to be put down for attacking the poor pit bull

Good outcome but stupid kid; she could easily have been lunch. I can’t believe the owners aren’t dealt with more harshly - here, a dog is destroyed if it attacks anything, without question.

it didn’t necessarily attack anything. If it was really attacking the little dog, it would’ve been lunch. Those dogs are seriously powerful animals, a little girl isn’t going to do much to stop it.

I think it’d have been totally fucked up if the pitbull got put to sleep because it ran at someone’s dog. My dog runs at other dogs all the damn time at the dog park to sniff their asses and stuff.

Why am I thinking the rat started the fight?

chihuahuas are punks

They have a ban on pit bull in Denver and it is spreading to some srounding cities. Personially I think it is BS. My 130 lbs German shepard is nothing more than a big fluffy petting post. It’s more the owner than the dog.

Reguardless, it’s genetic instincts. Your housecat is very gentle, but when it sees a mouse, it’s instincts takes over. Those breeds have been bred for specific aggressive purposes.

Too true. Inherited instincts play a huge part in animal behavior.

My dog, a 5 year old male Akita, doesn’t have any problem with small dogs/cats, and people young and old.
But if he spots a small bird near him, that bird is a goner through and through. He’ll tear that bird to pieces.

I don’t know why he has that killer lust towards small birds, perhaps in part because historically, Akita had been used as hunting dogs. Who knows?

I once saw my samoyed (my totally adorable, big brown eyed, long eyelashed, happy smiling samoyed) chase down a small rabbit and tear its head off

My aunt has a dog that probably weights more then my sister (then againt their both really skinny but that aint the point) and all she wants is a lot of attnetion, a bit annoying when she comes into the living room during christmass while your opening presents and jumps around trying to get everyone to huddle around her and pet her.

I delt with a Pitbull once…and by dealing with it i mean it was wandering the neihborhood, one of its eyes out, and my sister and i went over too it, i grabbed it by its coller and checked the adress and took it back to its owner. Little bastard was pretty strong though, kept jerking me in other directions.

That kinda sounds like Cochino the Chihuahua from thos Homies figurines

Animal aggression and human aggression. Two different things in dogs. And it is entirely possible the pit went running to play with the other dog. Mine will do this. Of course mine is extremely social and goes to the dog park 3x per week. He runs straight at any dog and just begs to get chased and beat up.

IMHO the pit didnt want to kill the chihuaha. Because if it did, there would have been a dead chihuaha. One bite would probably do it and a 10 year old wouldn’t be able to stop it.

Many bad people own pit bulls. It is really a shame. They are such great dogs. So smart. So single minded. And they absolutely love people. But is the breed of choice for complete fuckheads.

If you ever wonder how these dogs can just go ‘mad’ and attack people - take a look. People don’t treat them very well. They get burned, stabbed, shot, beaten, starved, dragged behind cars, tied to train tracks, burned on BBQ grills. And that isn’t even fighting them until they are maimed or dead. It makes me sick to my stomach to hear pit bulls labelled as monsters. Who the fuck are the monsters here?

My dog (a boxer) plays with other dogs by running over them. I shit you not. When the neighbors bought two dogs which they said were pitbulls that would eat my dog, but turned out to be weiner dogs (my neighbohrs aren’t very smart), he just ran at them and over them. It wasn’t malicious. It’s just how he plays. Yet he’d NEVER bite a human, and he doesn’t even run up to dogs he sees on the street. All you have to do is give him a stern look and he won’t budge.

Yrkoon brings up another good point: animals just reflect on their owners. If the owner is a piece of shit, the dog will reflect that.

A Manchester Terrier will stop eating its own food to go chase after a mouse. I know a corgie who grabs chihuahuas by the head because that is what his instincts tell him to do. I also know some punk bastard chihuahuas who would have been put down by now if they were big enough to inflict damage.

I break up dog fights nearly every day, and it does not matter what the breed the dog is. We have a really bitchy pitbull, Frances. Her mom is ultra cool and encourages us to put her away for frequent naps. Frances needs them. She’ll fight with anyone, particularly Harriet, a lab mix. In fact, the only dog that has purposely attacked a human where I work was a labrador. The dog that we refer to as “our” dog is Bella, a pit bull. Sweetest, smartest little thing. Before we changed the system, when we would go to change out the mop buckets, she would go get the soap for us just off of her own will.

Of the dogs that aren’t allowed in the playgroups without muzzles are a Giant Schnauzer, a Golden Retreiver, a basic mutt, and a lab mix. The pitts all have a good time yawning in public.

That said, a pit bull could have ripped that little girl to shreds. I suspect that the reason she is alive is that the pit wasn’t really trying to attack the chihuahua. If the pit was in full on “attack” mode, the kid would have been toast. That reminds me of the time I was trying to get Dewey, a malamute, off of another dog. I grabbed him by his hind legs (a preferred spot–away from teeth), and he turned around and snarled at me. It scared the crap out of me. But the instant after he snarled, he realized it was me, someone he knows and submits to, and he backed off. The fight just stopped. He wasn’t interested in going after the other dog anymore. But for the split second where his teeth were bared and he hadn’t recognized me just yet, that was pretty fucking scary. I can’t imagine what that little girl would have done had the pit turned on her.

Jesus, yrkoon, I knew a lot of shitbags owned pitbulls, but I had no idea that so many were abused that seriously. I will definately take that into account in the future, as I’ve always just dismissed them as violent dogs for violoent trashy people.

Personally, I never liked dogs all that much except for my neighbor’s malamute, which I would dog-sit and walk through all of junior high and most of high school. Even though he was old and eventually died at around 14, up until that day he was a ridiculously serene and noble looking guy except when he got excited and tried to run and play and would fall over himself because he was too old and weak.

I must have the meanest chihuahua ever then. He has taken on a female pit-bull and beat her ass. Bwahh ha ha ha I know its hard to believe but its true… well the dog did grab him by the leg and slammed him onto the concrete leaving him with a nasty bruise on his snout but he got back up and BIT HER LEGS LOL and ears with a lock jaw untill my dag pulled the dogs apart. I’m proud of my little guy. hes now 12 years old and mean as ever but hes starts coughing after a couple of barks.
