PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Former boxing champion Vinny Paz will lose his driver’s license until at least December for refusing to take a breathalyzer test during a police stop last year, a judge ruled Thursday.

Paz pleaded no contest to refusing the test when he was arrested by Warwick police on Dec. 16, 2004, for allegedly swerving on the road and going double the speed limit in a 30 mph zone.

In January, a judge ordered his license suspended for three months with the understanding that Paz was a first-time offender. Upon learning that he was arrested outside a Pawtucket nightclub in 2000, the judge reopened the case and resentenced him.

Magistrate Domenic A. DiSandro III on Thursday ordered that Paz lose his license for one year, retroactive to December, and ordered Paz into an alcohol treatment program.

Paz is a former World Boxing Association super middleweight champion and International Boxing Federation lightweight champion. He retired last year after his 50th professional boxing victory.
