Damn, my math sucks, I’ve spent a while now trying to figure that out, and I still don’t know the answer.
As for the judgement calls, perhaps I should have titled it “for idiot savants” or some such thing, but that would have been equally insulting, which is to say, not insulting at all.
My nephew has asbergers(sp), and we get along just fine, he knows there’s stuff he’s awkward at, and he looks at me like I’m a child when discussing ANYTHING to do with spatial relations. The kid can tie hundreds of different knots with his eyes closed, literally. That doesn’t mean he or I need to pretend he’s good at public speaking or anything else. He can revel in his good qualities just fine without those other skills, we all do.
As for “full” autism, sure, it’s a profound condition, tough for families to deal with, and I feel for them. I’ve spoken with a great number of families that deal with it, and some are sensitive about the “savant” stereotype, but I think they miss the boat on that one. People view autistics that way because they get the profound sense that there’s something deep caught inside the shell, and it touches on their humanity. What if you were cut off? What would be your interface? Numbers, soft textures, music? Or would you be wholly cut off? That’s the sense that people get of autistics, that they are human spirits trapped in poor interfacing mechanisms, and so they attribute what most people think is the most human quality, intellect, and they believe it lives in the autistic to a greater degree than themselves. Is this, in itself, selfish or cruel, even if it might not be true?
I’ll just assume that the drama had to do with something deleted from this thread, because there’s nothing on here to get in a huff about. True, the numbers thing is a cliche/stereotype, but there are plenty of people who match that stereotype.
