Interesting thread.
Lots of things said there that are often said here about TMA vs. MMA (sport fencing being ‘MMA’ ‘Classical’ fencing being ‘TMA’).
fencing is NOT a martial art, it is and will forever be a sport.
classical fencing is tring to “fence” the original way BUT most school have major flaws in their training system. most classical fencer being fencer in the first place, they reproduce mistakes created by the fencing sport. and the fact that in fencing grappling is used almost all the time is ignored.
The point is that the ‘Classical’ fencers are just pretending to be some oldschool fencing ‘ninjas’ who could destroy any sport fencer ‘on the streets’ aka: in a live-blade duel.
Just like in Martial Arts, there is no such thing as ‘Classical’ fencing, just modern fencing in a different time period.
Why is this in Trollshido?

Archery, Horsemanship, Spearfighting, fencing- all martial arts aren’t they? Among many others.
Probably not the best choice for modern self defense but that isn’t the definition of a martial art, no? Initially intended to train someone for combat.
Many martial arts are just used in sport now.
Fencing is just as much a martial art as any other combat sport, though many people probobly don’t consider combat sports martial arts.
Fencing is a maritial art but to call mma you would have to say pick any sword & want to cross trian in kendo at the least,

I didn’t say sport fencing WAS MMA, I was saying that the arguments between ‘classical’ fencers and sport fencers where similar to the ones between TMA and MMA.
