Dilemma

One of the problems of depression is it’s ability to follow you anywhere.

To the OP:

You sound exactly like me my first couple of years of college. I went to a University that is consistently ranked in the top 5 in the US for most unhappy student life (I think we were number 1 twice while I was there) and I was bogged down with a tough course load (Chemistry major Japanese Studies minor) and girlfriend woes.

My advice:

  1. Ditch the girl. College is full of girls and your odds of meeting someone better is high.

  2. If you haven’t already, try to make good friends with a few people in your program. This will seriously help with your studies. Being able to motivate and keep each other on track is incredibly important. You might want to stretch out your course load as well. If possible, take classes year round so that you can take fewer at a time.

  3. Since you’re on this site, you must be interested in martial arts. Find a club ASAP. If one doesn’t exist on your campus start your own, I did and it’s still around today at my Alma Mater. The exercise and involvement in something you’ve helped create will be a great source of stress relief and satisfaction.
