Hi maybe you’s all could help us here?I have a student who has a physically deformed arm like it’s mostly limp. It was cool when he wanted to just train I was like yeah of course and taught him some moves like jab and grappling stuff but then he was like why aren’t I sparring? Twas difficult yeah, like what was I supposed to tell him, you is a spazzer no one wants to spar you?
So I tried to put him off by insisting on expensive sparring gears but he coughed up the notes and turns up at class with head gear and groin gear and shin pads. And one glove. I didn’t have the heart to say no not after making him shell out 200 quid on red foam attires.
So I let him spar but then new problem presented itself. You see, everyone goes really easy on him like not punching him in the face cos he can’t block it with his deformed hand he’s wide open to a left hook or stiff jab inee. And they do everything possible not to grapple cos they are scared of the hand. Maybe he’s mentally retarded too cos he is oblivious to all this and thinks he’s shit hot at sparring.
Now he wants to enter MMA events what should I tell him? He’s gonna get slaughtered he’s crap and defenceless but he has only ever won sparring even experienced cage fighters. ??help pls?
I’m his teacher I can’t beat him up and I never tell any student to beat up another I expect respect and restraint but this time it is causing problems. Maybe I should teach him to rely on kicking cos he has two normal person’s legs
Jean Jacques Machado has a bum hand, his left to be exact, nothing but a thumb and pinky and in spite of this is well… Jean Jacques Machado. I would say gear up, go light. Work with the kid, spend some time ramping it up, be honest with him, tell him there’s things he just can’t do. But if he want’s to spar, let him. Make sure the rest of your class knows it’s not cool to treat him any different.
I worked with a kid in Kali who had nothing past the lowest knuckle on any of the fingers of his right hand, lost his stick a lot, but he kept at it, got fairly good too.
Just because your student has a bum arm shouldn’t deter YOU from treating the kid any different. You were frankly wrong to ask him to get any more gear then any other student, and frankly wrong in my opinion to deny him any training he is physically able to complete.
He obviously want’s to fight. Tell him most likely MMA just isn’t an option, but damn it if he wants to spar get in there and hit him yourself if needed till either he gets better or the rest of your class grows up or he givs up on the idea!
You need to have someone go hard with him. No other answer. Trying subtle ways like jacking up the cost and so forth only hurt in the long run. The sooner he realizes that with only 1 good arm he won’t make it in MMA, the sooner and better he can deal with it.
This is exactly the wrong sentiment, treat every student irregardless of age weight ability or handicap the same, makes it a hell of a lot easier in the long run.
No I am an awesome teacher and there’s nothing wrong with making a healthy profit out of teaching MA to people with no likelihood of succeeding should they ever need it.
