Lab leak could just be research based. That specific institute was doing research on coronaviruses because they had been identified as a potential risk jumping to humans, which is where the gain of function debate comes from. Allow the virus to mutate to a point that it can infect humans (humanised mice), then develop preventative measures / study it.

I want to add that I was terrified of getting covid when all this started. Even back then before all the research I understood that even a minor infection could screw up your lungs for life. I mostly worried about this because I do martial arts like everyone else here. My friend was under 30 and she developed long covid. She actually had to change jobs because it screwed her up so bad.
