Pretty decent write up and video covering the Dog Brothers shot at the last public Gathering. That’s me being interviewed in the yellow ‘Got Poi?’ shirt. It was a great day.

Aloha, Poi

PS - Don’t be fooled by the short guy in the other yellow shirt getting hit, that ain’t me. Accept only the original – Poi Dog!!

Cool, I would’ve liked to see them use some of the chest camera footage, and I figured they’d use part of that match where those two dudes were wailing on each other with chains.

Don’t beat me with a stick kthnxby.

Great Vid. Wish there was a Dog Brothers here.

Don’t read the comments section.

Any well trained martial artist would close the range instantly, take the person off their feet and gouge their eyes. They’d maybe take one good shot if they were too slow, then the altercation would be over. This sparring around for minutes beating each other to a pulp is pointless. Pain tolerance? A trained expert prefers pain intolerance and not abusing their body for pointless macho reasons

I like the way it’s set up, but there isn’t any type of ‘hit’ system in place. If these were actual blades, wouldn’t a lot of the contenders be cut open while trying to close in for grappling?

Cool video!! I saw it on the DBMA news letter. The quote at the end is the best. “Some people won’t understand. But that’s ok, we don’t need everyone to understand.” Something like that. I need a tattoo of that!

Cool.

Kinda why their unarmed defense vs. knife course is called Die Less Often, huh?

Have you done much knife sparring? I have a few times, just enough to know that if someone pulls a knife, haul ass!!!

I was very surprised to see this on the cnn front page today. Its not an awful article, really just scratching the surface of stick fighting, but it doesn’t make them seem overly crazy.

The comments at the bottom of course, end up being infuriating

I swear I saw this posted somewhere already. Awesome screen time for our own bully. Go Poidog!

It’s a pretty decent article. The comments of even the least contoversial articles are populated by people who strive to misunderstand. There is always some douche that will somehow bring up “death matches/fight club” after an article like this. The article fairly presented the purpoes and intent of the Dog Bros. I was pleasantly surprised.

My motto has always been if someone pulls a knife, pull out a bigger knife, or one of these:

Yeah, but the solid trainers (or previously, shockknives) give the feedback about that, not a judge stopping and resetting, so I think there’s a level of realism not found in Cold Steel Challenge type venues, where a tag to the arm magically stops the action.

Yeah, that’s about the only way I would engage a knife fight. That is, if I had the option not to engage.

Holy shit that sound awesome. Do you have a link to said chain-fight?
Holy shit that sound awesome. Do you have a link to said chain-fight?
I’m actually friends with one of the chain-fighters on FB. We fought later that day with sticks, and had fought a year prior as well. There’s no video though, because the Dog Brothers folks don’t allow any video recording (official photographers/videographers excepted). Anyway, my favorite part of the chain-fight was that one guy was on the ground on his back with the other guy standing, and he grabbed the other guy’s chain and pulled him in, and pressed a foot against his hip to break his posture, and proceeded to land many unanswered strikes to the head while the other guy was struggling to get away with his weapon. They also exchanged back and forth while standing for a bit.

Afterwards, he showed me the welts from the chain. It was a decent sized chain, but the welts were actually less severe looking than the ones from a stick. The chain loses its umph when it conforms to the shape its hitting, and it seems like there’s a lot of noise and such without much damage. So, if someone pulls a chain on you, don’t worry- its not that damaging and the user probably doesn’t know that.

I was super excited to see these. Many of my Ohana were there (Dean Webster, Sleddog–Philip Gelinas) so I was glad to see this group get some good press.

Wish I had the time to go.
