Canadian Combat Sambo Challenge - 2006

Who’d you have in mind?

Im not entirely sure we can talk about it in person, though Im not exactly sure who you are? lol Im sure a trip to montreal will appeal to many an i have some buddys who dont train much in guelph but will prolly be interested. Perhaps we shall wait till details surface then see who is interested I can think of 3-4 guys myself included who’d most likely be game we’ll have to see about the others.

P-dub are you pattie the “P” makes me think so an yeah not sure who else you could be

Will have another next year.Anyone can participate, but Sambo uniform and shoes are needed.

Yes, Steve, I’m the Pattie you think I am.

Team G-spot in da house?

we might have to look into this shoe buisness and none of us have sambo shorts to my knowledge could we get away with wearing whatever athletic/boardshorts shorts and gi tops? we can scrounge up enough gi tops to go round for sure. Heres hoping they set the date earlier than september this time…come on january or febuary 3/4 of the prospective team will be graduating this coming may including our ride. I guess we wait and see what the outcome of Sambosteve’s meeting this weekend and then we can try to sort out the details.

and yes god willing (and with the grace of the hosting club) we shall be in the house maybe even in the hiizzzzzzoussseeee its to early to tell

Gi tops won’t do, you guys have to have kurtka. But, Club Kozak and I both sell them. There are several outlets to get them. Kozak also has sambo shoes. A few other outlets as well. Any mma, singlet, or board shorts should be OK.

Either Kozak or I willpost the info after we hash it out this weekend

Great that you guys are considering putting a team together.

karatefighter.Being from Toronto you can get the sambo jackets and shoes from myself. As sambosteve said, Gi tops wont do.

whats the good word?

Ah yes…

What is the preformance difference between gis and kurtkas?

Yeah, I was wondering that too.

Greetings.

IIRC the kurtka is cut and fits a little different than your average gi. Also the whole red vs. blue thing…

There are different fits and cuts of gi… isn’t the main idea to just have a sturdy shirt that won’t rip that you can pitch each other around by and choke someone with?
Shit, I don’t see the difference between a Judo gi, and aikido gi, a BJJ gi, a shuai jiao jacket, or a kurtka in function, so is it really all about the red vs blue thing?

The main difference with the kurtka is the belt. The fact that the belt loops through the jacket keeps the belt in place and the jacket from untucking. Becasue of this, the use of the belt is a bit more significant for gripping and control. It does not untie as much and gives you better control of your opponent. Other than this, the tighter fit can be a difference but to a much lesser extent. The skirt is also much shorter than gis but, this is only a minor difference. In my opinion, it is the belt that is most significant.

a shuai jiao jacket is even tighter fitting than a kurtka and often much less to grip in the front. Also, there are short sleeves which inhibit arm control.

Thats awesome, i’ll be registaring to for it as soon as possible.

So does that mean you’d refuse to fight a SC practitioner unless he put on a kurtka? or a Judoka?
If the belt is an important control, why not make it so that if it comes off somehow the match is stopped and the belt quickly retied…
I mean, I can understand it being the traditional garb and all, but I know I don’t have the solvent cash to buy one just so I can hang with the sambo crew.

No, of course not. I spar with folks in judo and jj gis all the time. I do change my game a bit and use less belt grips. But, it is not a problem, just different approach. In the end a lacket is a jacket. Regarding the belt, in the past when we did allow gis in sambo events, we had them tape the knot closed so it would not come undone. Still, the problem with open loose jackets was there though.

We have loaners at our events so folks don’t need to buy one. We also sell them discounted at our events for athletes who are competing.

I doubt I could walk into a judo comp and wear a kurtka either.
